Wits, Pirates in goalless draw

Posted: 30 April 2014 Time: 18:55

Bidvest Wits played out to a third consecutive 0-0 draw in the League following a stalemate against Orlando Pirates at Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday night.

In a game of very few clear-cut chances, the Students perhaps shaded possession, though it seemed clear that both teams had their minds on their respective Nedbank Cup semi-finals on Saturday.

Pirates threatened first and came close to scoring twice in two minutes through Kermit Erasmus and Lennox Bacela, but on both occasions the ball went inches wide with Moeneeb Josephs in trouble.

Senzo Meyiwa had to tip over a long-range shot from Tebogo Moerane on 21 minutes, before saving with his legs to deny Sthembiso Ngcobo, who had got in behind Bucs’ defence with a great first touch.

Just past the half-hour mark Erasmus found himself with space and time inside the area but shot over, before Ngcobo produced a poor header from a cross from Denver Mukamba, who did well to skin Lucky Lekgwathi.

Oupa Manyisa had a long-range shot which troubled Josephs in the final minutes of the half, before Calvin Kadi scuffed his shot from Matthew Booth’s flick-on just wide.

Goal-mouth action was harder to come by in the second half, with the first effort coming on the hour-mark when substitute Sifiso Myeni headed wide from Daine Klate’s cross.

Wits were having much more of the ball in the second 45 and came close to making that count on 73 minutes when Jabu Shongwe looked certain to score but for a brave, last-ditch tackle from Rooi Mahamutsa.

Shongwe had another great chance in the dying seconds, but he hit the side-netting as the teams settled for a point apiece.

So it’s as you were in the League standings with Wits remaining third, while Pirates stay in fifth with two games remaining.
