Kaizer Chiefs go out of CAF with a whimper

Posted: 27 April 2014 Time: 19:47

Kaizer Chiefs were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup after a 1-0 defeat to ASEC Mimosas in Abidjan on Sunday.

Chiefs travelled to the Ivory Coast with a squad of only 13 players and placed assistant coach Doctor Khumalo in charge as Stuart Baxter remained at home to prepare for his side's next League match.

There were not many changes to the starting eleven that lost 2-1 in the first leg at home as Morgan Gould captained the side.

ASEC had an early penalty appeal waved away in an open start to the game before Rusike rattled the woodwork in a show of intent. Chiefs' fringe players looked hungry to impress in the heat of Abidjan.

However, despite the Ivorian side showing their visitors respect, Chiefs were unable to break down a stubborn ASEC defence and failed to register many shots on target in the first half.

In the second half ASEC striker Foba Stevens Koffi went close with one effort and sent another shot wide as he looked to break the deadlock.

Khumalo eventually used one of his two substitutes named on the bench when Lorenzo Gordinho came on for Siyabonga Nkosi, who was dictating the play in the first half.

It was a game short of goalmouth action as Chiefs had 10 goal attempts but were unable to make the ASEC goalkeeper work, while Reyaad Pieterse was also having a quiet day at the office.

However, Koffi got the goal he was looking for late in the game after receiving the ball in the six-yard area and placing a shot past Pieterse. The linesman had his flag up as he scored, but the referee awarded the goal.

The goal ended the tie as Chiefs lost 3-1 on aggregate and were knocked out of Africa.

Chiefs XI: Pieterse, Moleko, Mtsweni, Gould (c), Bukenya, Baloyi, Maluleka, Cele, Nkosi (Gordinho 70'), Rusike, Masango

Bench: Khuzwayo, Gordinho
Coach: Doctor Khumalo

Mthinayi, don't smoke or nay before answering or else your answer will go all square.  what relegation? which seasons were those when your team finished below 4th, then out of top8?  was that too long ago to forget and now you talk like 'an almost liverpool champ in england for the 1st time in 24yrs', and so therefore you are the GREAREST?! as recent as 36mths ago, Pirates were the best team in SA in three different categories of national top competitions, something your team is still puffing and huffing to achieve.

ninja4bucs Tshinyiwaho  Maybe, but then maybe not.  This bad officiating is not doing African football any good.  While the beneficiaries of this dubious officiating may puff their chests, they forget that there is soccer beyond the African continent where they cant be beneficiaries of dubious officiating.  Ask all these countries that do so well at Nations Cup, CAF champions league and Confed Cuo levels like your North African teams (Egypt in particular) and it is very interesting that some of them do not even qualify for the World Cup.  Being beneficiaries of dubious officiating just makes you a big fish in a small pond and this goes for our PSL teams as well!!

thiefs should stop acting like baboons in a mealifield, (busy stealing the mealie cob and put it under the arm whilst breaking another and putting it underneath the same arm simultaneously dropping the first mealie-cob it had stolen in the process'.  at the end of the day by the time the farmer comes chasing, it goes hungry as it had not gathered any food from its stealing venture.  now, why stay at home and chase an almost lost cause instead of trying to make a game of it in abidjan? it's difficult to see how s'dns will drop more than 2pts (one draw, i.e.) in their last three.  dream on!
