Kaizer Chiefs go out of CAF with a whimper

Posted: 27 April 2014 Time: 19:47

Kaizer Chiefs were knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup after a 1-0 defeat to ASEC Mimosas in Abidjan on Sunday.

Chiefs travelled to the Ivory Coast with a squad of only 13 players and placed assistant coach Doctor Khumalo in charge as Stuart Baxter remained at home to prepare for his side's next League match.

There were not many changes to the starting eleven that lost 2-1 in the first leg at home as Morgan Gould captained the side.

ASEC had an early penalty appeal waved away in an open start to the game before Rusike rattled the woodwork in a show of intent. Chiefs' fringe players looked hungry to impress in the heat of Abidjan.

However, despite the Ivorian side showing their visitors respect, Chiefs were unable to break down a stubborn ASEC defence and failed to register many shots on target in the first half.

In the second half ASEC striker Foba Stevens Koffi went close with one effort and sent another shot wide as he looked to break the deadlock.

Khumalo eventually used one of his two substitutes named on the bench when Lorenzo Gordinho came on for Siyabonga Nkosi, who was dictating the play in the first half.

It was a game short of goalmouth action as Chiefs had 10 goal attempts but were unable to make the ASEC goalkeeper work, while Reyaad Pieterse was also having a quiet day at the office.

However, Koffi got the goal he was looking for late in the game after receiving the ball in the six-yard area and placing a shot past Pieterse. The linesman had his flag up as he scored, but the referee awarded the goal.

The goal ended the tie as Chiefs lost 3-1 on aggregate and were knocked out of Africa.

Chiefs XI: Pieterse, Moleko, Mtsweni, Gould (c), Bukenya, Baloyi, Maluleka, Cele, Nkosi (Gordinho 70'), Rusike, Masango

Bench: Khuzwayo, Gordinho
Coach: Doctor Khumalo

Tshinyiwaho Sundowns got to the final once and we are always interested  in playing Caf. Your Zebras dont want to play in this competitions hence your coach was celebrating freedom day here at home when the team is playing

Two subs..with assistant coach...

Very unprofessional by Chiefs....Is baxter undermining the North african contries or CAF

PSL and SAFA must deal with this...a profesional team only sending two subs

Svai  Yep, you are right, and that was very good!  But  If we follow Beerginer's argument, then you should be chucked out of the PSL since this year you have been a shadow of your former selves

Beerginner Tshinyiwaho  I do not see it that way, but I respect your point.  But despite your interest in the competitions, remember how many times you have been dumped out  during the initial stages (ecxept for the time you played in the final) and no one suggested you should be banned from CAF tourneys.  You still have to win a continental tourney though, lest you will always  remain big fish in a small pond.  Albeit I understand and respect the points/arguments of those who believe Chiefs should have fielded a full strength side, If I were the coach, I would have adopted the same strategy as Baxter. moreso if there were still two competitions to fight for.  Why waste all the energy over a tournament that you have lost already?

If any monkey wants to blame us for not being serious about CAF games, then they should blame themselves for not winning the champions league, for being molested by platinum stars in two consecutive finals. As for sundowns your time will come to win the league not this time.Dont agree with me for now you will realise on the 6th of may

This game is like water under the bridge now, one wonders what's next for the Zebras because as it stands they are failing to defend their league title and the chances of winning Nedbank cup are very small.
