Mpumalanga Black Aces did bottom club Golden Arrows a favour by edging struggling Free State Stars 3-2 at Goble Park on Saturday afternoon.
After a goalless opening half, AmaZayoni came from behind to prevail via goals from Miguel Timm, Eddie Ngalo and Thabo Qalinge, while Abdul Adam Basit and Moeketsi Sekelo were on target for Stars.
Had Ea Lla Koto, who are 15th on the Premiership table, won, Arrows would have been all but relegated.
Clive Barker's outfit, meanwhile, are now an impressive fourth in the standings following the result.
Stars started the tie brightly, as on-loan striker Richard Henyekane and Luyola Nomandela drew fine stops from goalkeeper Bafana Nhlapo early on, while at the other end Timm blasted over before the interval after going on a strong run.
The hosts, though, broke the deadlock straight after the recess, as Sekelo beat Nhlapo with a powerful strike.
Aces, however, replied with interest, as Timm equalised in the 52nd minute with an effort from the edge of the area before his unmarked skipper Ngalo converted from close range 20 minutes later.
Qalinge made it 3-1 to the visitors with a delightful curling effort from the edge of the box in the 82nd minute.
Stars substitute Abdul Basit Adam, who came on for Nomandela just past the hour-mark, then reduced the deficit with a low drive but his side were unable to make further progress.
