Premier Soccer League match report SuperSport United 0-0 Bidvest Wits

Posted: 19 April 2014 Time: 13:57

Bidvest Wits' title prospects took strain as they drew 0-0 with SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In a Premiership tie where both goalkeepers shone, United ended proceedings with ten men as Thabo September was sent off late on for a second bookable offence.

The result leaves third-placed Wits on 51 points from 26 matches - seven points behind Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who will play their third last game tonight against Moroka Swallows. Champions Kaizer Chiefs have 55 points from 26 fixtures.

Wits should have scored in the 16th minute, but Sthembiso Ngcobo fired high and wide in the box when his skipper Sibusiso Vilakazi was available for a simple tap-in.

Soon after, SuperSport's Dino Ndlovu met a cross from the left but his header lacked power and was easily gathered by Moeneeb Josephs.

United net-minder Ronwen Williams did well midway through the opening stanza, when he parried away a stinging effort from Jabulani Shongwe from distance.

Josephs then made a fine stop on the half-hour mark, as he dropped down sharply to foil a strike from Bradley Grobler on the  run.

At the other end, Shongwe fired over from close range after being teed up by Ngcobo's headed cross before the break.

The Students threatened six minutes after the interval, as Vilakazi's attempt on the angle was kept out by Williams.

Gavin Hunt's men came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 59th minute, but Ngcobo's low shot in the box was denied by the upright, with Shongwe blasting over on the rebound.

Seven minutes later Williams was forced to tip over a curling effort from Kwando Mngonyama as the visitors continued to press.

Matsatsantsa nearly grabbed an 80th minute winner against the run of play but Josephs got the better of Ndlovu in a one-on-one situation.

September was then given his marching orders in the 87th minute for a foul on Erwin Isaacs.

What a bore, one of the worse games I've had so much expectations of, it was really bad. Ssp united parked the bus with kitchen sink in all. Wits tried but were also just going sideways. Hunt is a joke, last time he questioned matlaba's positional play, now he's blabbing about ssp united being a difficult side to play against cause he don't know where they are playing, hahaha, lol... Once and always bucs.

This result is good for Chiefs as it eliminates pressure behind. We've got Sundowns to push now.I just hope Swallows do the unthinkable.
