Luis Renteria’s first half strike handed Platinum Stars a 1-0 win over AmaZulu in their season opening Absa Premiership fixture at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The visitors looked the better side in the first half with Renteria and strike partner Simba Marumo combining well up front.
Stars should have taken the lead in the eighth minute when Renteria set up Marumo inside the area, but the striker’s tame effort went straight at Usuthu stopper Kalililo Kakonje.
However, the Tycoons made no mistake in the 21st minute when Marumo played in Renteria, who did well to shrug off the challenges of two defenders before firing home from just inside the AmaZulu area.
The score remained 1-0 at the break, with Usuthu coming back strong in the second half.
AmaZulu striker Dumisani Ngwenya wasted a superb chance in the 72nd minute when he latched onto a loose ball after Stars keeper Wayne Sandilands could only parry Myron Shongwe’s effort, but the striker failed to score from close range.
The hosts continued pushing forward until the last minute, in which Reagan Noble saw his goal-bound header superbly saved by Sandilands, and with that went the final chance of the game.
