Orlando Pirates SuperSport United PSL

Posted: 5 April 2014 Time: 15:03

Bradley Grobler scored the only goal of the game as SuperSport United beat Orlando Pirates at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The first half was a mostly lethargic affair, with the players wisely conserving their energy in the hot afternoon sun.

SuperSport started stronger and had a strong penalty appeal in the 10th minute turned down by the referee. Oupa Manyisa was perhaps fortunate not to haveconceded a spot-kick with what seemed a trip on Lebogang Manyama.

The hosts came close to opening the scoring through Thuso Phala just before the midway point of the first half, but the winger was denied by a good save from goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

Pirates gradually established a foothold in the game and finally called Ronwen Williams into action in the 23rd minute when Kermit Erasmus shot from just outside the box – his effort resulted in a comfortable save for the keeper.

SuperSport then had their turn of good fortune when Edwin Gyimah’s clumsy two-footed lunge on Happy Jele in the area was deemed fair by referee Victor Hlungwane.

Williams produced an excellent save just before the break to touch Tlou Segolela’s shot onto the outside of his near post.

Chances continued to be few and far between in the early part of the second half, but on 63 minutes the persistence of Enocent Mkhabela saw him break through three challenges before shooting on goal, but Meyiwa produced an excellent diving save to turn the ball away.

With 15 minutes to play Bucs made a double change to try and spruce up their attack, but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock moments later. Phala broke free down the right and fired in a low cross that Grobler turned home from close range.

Shortly thereafter Phala almost made it 2-0 with a shot from a tight angle, but Meyiwa made another excellent save to keep his side in the contest.

The United winger had another great chance on the counter attack in injury-time, but he pulled his shot wide of the far post.

Despite the defeat, Pirates remain in fourth spot, with SuperSport joining them on 37 points, but trailing on goal-difference.

I now think it was a bad move to get the new coach now. these are not pre-season games VV, we must win these games to remain in the top 4.

Non of the midfielders we have can fill the role Jali played at pirates. We need to sign 2 of the players who can play that position.

VV, if you cant play Matlaba as left back then play him as a winger. you just cant do without him.

When VV took over, the few games in charge, our defence was starting to look better but the past two games we are back to the RDS era. There is absolutely no respect for defence at Pirates. You cant win games if your defense is not solid. A strong team build on sound defence. Why do we always defend facing our goal. is like our defenders are strikers for opposition.

We have no striking combination as only one striker is played. Why play one striker when we usually score very few goals?????????? What is so special about Myeni that every game a striker is sacrificed for him?????? I cant believe even VV is using this many midfielders system that did not work for us.

Pirates seriously needs to change the whole system of play, very quickly!!!!! This thing of playing up high the pitch with defenders pushing forward is just overcrowding the midfield, exposing defence while doing nothing to get to opposition box. All the players are playing midfield, 9 of them, only one upfront and one at the back, the whole season and we continue to employ the same system that fails us even with a new coach. I no longer blame opposition for a bus, its us that push them into forming a bus.

@Treble Champ Superbrand, what "system" are you referring to? In my eyes, I don't even know what you call this type of soccer our OP is playing, can't even describe it. All I know is that it is crap football to say the least. Gee, there is a serious crisis there and am beginning to wonder if VV is the right person for this job given where we are...there are psychological problems there

A clean score sheet never win games. So does the goal shy strikers!

This is one of the times where Pirates fans need to learn to practice patience. You will never be relegated neither will you be icked out of the top 8. VV needs to start preparing for next season now. Let all players be given a chance to play, especially league games, and try to win the Nedbank cup.
