Lance Davids scored a bizarre last-minute goal as Ajax Cape Town beat Moroka Swallows 1-0 at Dobsonville Stadium on Friday night.
It was a game of few clear-cut chances, and one which was dominated by the Birds in terms of chances and possession, but the veteran midfielder’s free-kick in the 94th minute proved the difference.
The hosts had the first shot at target in the 11th minute when Felix Obada cleverly chested the ball to Lefa Tsutsulupa, but the midfielder’s rushed shot went inches wide with Anssi Jaakkola well beaten.
Ajax had their first effort three minutes later through a Keagan Dolly drive from distance which went wide, before Toriq Losper provided the miss of the half.
Some clever interplay down the left saw Dolly swing in a cross to Losper, who made a late run in the box before sending his free header wide from six yards out.
Swallows ended the half strongly, with Obada in particular very influential. First he headed over a tough chance from Dikgang Mabalane’s cross, before having a strong shot saved by Jaakkola’s legs.
The Birds should have taken the lead in the final minute when Obada fired in a shot towards goal but Siyabonga Nomvete, on the six-yard line, deflected the ball just wide.
Swallows were unlucky not to get a penalty on 73 minutes when Nazeer Allie brought down Obada in the box, before Nomvete blasted way over after being perfectly set up by Vuyisile Wana.
Cole Alexander flashed a shot just wide before Swallows threw everything at Ajax in the final five minutes.
First the influential Obada forced Jaakkola into a strong save, before he played Nomvete in on goal. The veteran striker’s first touch was poor, but he still got a shot away which rolled inches wide.
Nomvete came even closer on 88 minutes when Lerato Chabangu picked him out in the box, but his header went down into the ground and bounced over the bar.
The final whistle could not come soon enough for Ajax but then, with the last kick of the game, Davids hit a low free-kick from all of 30 metres out which completely fooled and embarrassed Greg Etafia.
It was Ajax first win in six matches – and first goal in five – as they move up to 10th, while Swallows drop one spot to 11th.
