Kaizer Chiefs exited the CAF Champions League on Saturday night despite beating DRC side AS Vita 2-0 at Soccer City.
Amakhosi, who were eliminated 3-2 on aggregate, scored via Knowledge Musona and Morgan Gould, with the former forced off with an injury before the break, as was goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse.
In an ill-tempered and poorly officiated game - further marred by unruly fan behaviour at the final whistle - Vita threatened in the first minute, as Luvumbi Nzinga's useful free-kick triggered a neat save from Pieterse.
At the other end, Kingston Nkhatha had the ball in the net after being released by Siphiwe Tshabalala but the Zimbabwean forward was incorrectly blown up for offside.
Chiefs, however, took the lead in the 10th minute, as Musona calmly finished from a one-on-one situation.
The 'Silent Assassin', though, failed from a similar position four minutes later, with Vita's keeper Herve Lomboto dropping down to make the stop.
Amakhosi then suffered a setback in the 20th minute, as Pieterse sustained a head injury after colliding with a post when making a save, prompting the introduction of Brilliant Khuzwayo.
The hosts were knocked back again when the lively Musona left proceedings with an ankle problem, with Matthew Rusike taking his place eight minutes shy of the interval.
Stuart Baxter's men pressed for a way back in the tie after the recess, with Nkhatha and Rusike testing Lomboto with a header and stinging strike before the hour-mark.
The Glamour Boys came agonisingly close to adding a second goal in the 65th minute, but Gould's shot was denied by the woodwork following a goal-mouth scramble. Earlier an opponent struck Gould in the face during a scuffle but the incident went unpunished by referee Rainhold Shikongo, who also turned down a strong penalty shout for a Vita hand-ball in the box.
Chiefs continued to apply pressure in the closing stages - with opposing net-minder Lomboto doing his utmost to wind down the clock - and netted again in optional time, as Gould rifled in a left-footed volley from just inside the area.
However, Vita were able to survive the final moments to progress to the group stages of the continental competition, while Baxter's side drop in to the draw for the CAF Confederation Cup playoff round.
