Downs dispatch Dikwena

Posted: 25 March 2014 Time: 19:01

Mamelodi Sundowns moved within three points of Premiership leaders Kaizer Chiefs following a 3-1 win at Platinum Stars on Tuesday night.

Downs, who have played one more game than Chiefs, claimed the spoils via goals from Surprise Moriri, Anthony Laffor and Lebohang Mokoena, while Robert Ng'ambi pulled one back at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

The visitors started brightly, and should have scored in the seventh minute but Mokoena missed from close range on the rebound after Teko Modise's attempted cross struck the upright. Moments earlier Mokoena found the net from a one-on-one situation but was blown up for offside.

The Brazilians continued to press, and got their reward in the 21st minute when Moriri pounced at the near post following a strong run and cross from Man of the Match Mzikayise Mashaba.

Pitso Mosimane's side deservedly entered the break 1-0 up, and extended their lead four minutes into the second stanza as Laffor stroked the ball home in the box after being unselfishly teed up by Mokoena.

Dikwena threatened on occasion through Siphelele Mthembu and midfielder Issa Sarr, with the latter forcing a sharp save from Wayne Sandilands just past the hour-mark.

At the other end, Siyabonga Mpontshane did brilliantly to pluck the ball away from the feet of a rampaging Laffor.

However, Mpontshane could do little about Mokoena's low strike from range into the corner of the goal in the 78th minute.

Stars, though, reduced the deficit two minutes later as an unmarked Ng'ambi headed in a corner, with Sandilands flapping at the delivery as his defence went to sleep.
