Nedbank Cup

Posted: 22 March 2014 Time: 14:48

Maritzburg United ended Platinum Stars' hopes of a cup treble by defeating Dikwena 3-1 on penalties in a Nedbank Cup Last 16 tie at Moruleng Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The game was decided by the spot after 120 minutes of football produced a 1-1 stalemate, with United's Heinrich Isaacks cancelling out Issa Sarr's 44th minute opener for the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout holders.

Bhongolwethu Jayiya, Robyn Johannes and Heinrich Isaacks went on to convert their penalties, to save the potential blushes of teammate Mario Booysen, who failed to do so.

Stars captain Vuyo Mere slotted his effort from 12 yards out, but Henrico Botes, Solomon Mathe and Sibusiso Msomi were unsuccessful with their attempts for the hosts.

The Team of Choice now join Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits in the quarter-finals of the competition, with the Students thumping AmaZulu 4-1 in Durban earlier today.

In a fast-paced encounter, United attacker Orlando Smeekes struck the bottom of the post 15 minutes in after being released by Isaacks.

However, Stars replied with interest on the stroke of half-time, as Sarr nodded in a free-kick from Mogakolodi Ngele.

The lead, though, was short-lived, as Isaacks bundled in a 52nd minute equaliser following good work from Smeekes down the left.

Allan Freese's side should have made better use of their opportunities in the second period, with Siphelele Mthembu proving especially wasteful.

The big striker missed an open net from close range after rounding goalkeeper Virgil Vries in the 55th minute. A minute later Mthembu hit the upright from a tight angle after finding himself in another one-on-one situation.

Mthembu then did well to create space in the box in the 72nd minute, but his low shot was well saved by Man of the Match Vries.

The spurned chances would ultimately prove fateful, as Steve Komphela's outfit emerged victorious from the lottery that is the penalty shoot-out.

I am glad this Dikwena team is out . Hey this team does not like to see Soweto Clubs , they donered the Rats or Pierats twice in a Cup Finals and beat us in League games . Passop , now that they are out of the way , AmaKhosi will definitely win the Nedbank Cup

All this Platinum Stars know is to beat the big teams when they face smaller teams like them they struggle and this is why they will remain a small team who dnt attract big crowds.Well done Maritzburg United well done Steve.

Platinum stars always play better against the Glamorous boys...and forgot the teams like Maritzburg and other minows like our neighbours

So Maritzburg Utd did what Pirates couldn't do on 2 occasions in cup games and that is to beat Platinum Stars..

Well.. This doesn't just reveal Pirates' choking abilities but also exposes RDS as a small coach who should've stuck coaching minnows..

This must the wake up call to Bucs that the spot to finals is not guarantied to anyone. Atleast our hoodoo opponents have been knocked out.

S'phelele Mthembu is a lethal striker and I'm still asking myself why he failed at Pirates. But then some players are only good when playing for smaller teams where there's no pressure to perform.

I hope that Cowdon Icowsend will give him a chance in the national team just to prove himself. I mean if he gave abo-Vuyo Cowmere a chance to embarrass the nation, so why not this boy?
