Orlando Pirates became the first side to reach the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals following a 2-0 victory over Santos in Cape Town on Friday night.
Lennox Bacela scored a first-half opener against his former side, with Man of the Match Rooi Mahamutsa heading home after the interval at Athlone Stadium.
Pirates dominated possession early on, but looked vulnerable in the 13th minute when youngster Sachin Dawood headed a free-kick over from the left following a push by Lucky Lekgwathi on Edwin Sitayitayi.
Bucs, however, took the lead from the spot in the 29th minute, as Bacela gently rolled the ball inside the left upright after Dawood felled the lively Tlou Segolela in the area.
The Sea Robbers looked solid at the back for much of the opening stanza, although some indecision nearly allowed Sitayitayi a sight on goal from close range just before the recess.
The second period got off to a slow start, but ignited in the 65th minute when Mahamutsa rose impressively to nod in a Mpho Makola corner.
Vladimir Vermezovic's men controlled the pace up until the closing stages, as the People's Team twice came close to scoring in stoppage time through substitute David Radebe. The ex-Bafana Bafana striker first missed a penalty - incorrectly awarded for a hand-ball against Lekgwathi - before seeing his lob beat Senzo Meyiwa but not the cross bar.
