Knowledge Musona scores twice as Kaizer Chiefs win

Posted: 19 March 2014 Time: 21:29

Knowledge Musona scored two late goals to hand Kaizer Chiefs a 2-0 win against Ajax Cape Town at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.

After a fairly even first half, Amakhosi dominated after the break, only to be denied time and again by visiting goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola.

However, Musona did his double-act late on to ensure that Chiefs would go six points clear with goals in the 85th and 90th minutes.

After Aiden Jenniker and Musona had shots from range parried for corner, the first real chance of the evening fell to Ajax when Tasreeq Morris dispossessed Tsepo Masilela on the halfway line, creating a two-on-one situation. However, he’s pass to Keagan Dolly was terrible and the moment was lost.

Nazeer Allie then came to the rescue when he cleared Tefu Mashamaite’s header from a corner-kick off the line, while Jaakkola made a strong punch to clear Siphiwe Tshabalala’s free-kick.

Chiefs goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse stood firm on 17 minutes to keep out Morris’ powerful drive after some great work by Thamsanqa Sangweni, while at the other end Musona dragged his shot wide after a great one-two with Kingston Nkhatha.

It was the start of a frustrating half for the ‘Smiling Assassin’, who then had a shot saved and another go wide in quick succession.

Sangweni was proving very influential for Ajax and had a powerful effort skim just wide of the upright after he dispossessed Nkhatha.

Jaakkola, who had looked a bit shaky up to this point, saved his team’s blushes after Aiden Jenniker’s misjudged his backpass – the Finn rushing back to clear off the line.

The best chance of the half came in time added on when Jaakkola misjudged Nkhatha’s cross from the right. The ball fell to Musona but, with an open net, he scuffed his shot, allowing Thulani Hlatshwayo to clear off the line.

Whatever Stuart Baxter shouted into his players’ ears at halftime seemed to do the trick as they came out a much more attacking side.

On 50 minutes Jaakkola was at his best to save another powerful Mashamaite header, before getting down low to keep out Matthew Rusike’s shot from a tight angle.

Tshabalala then fired off a thunderbolt from the edge of the area which rattled the crossbar, before Chiefs eventually had the ball in the back of the net, only for it to be ruled out.

Nkhatha finished with a beautiful overhead-kick, but referee Lwandile Mfiki correctly ruled that Mashamaite had handled the ball in the build-up.

Ajax had a rare chance on 67 minutes when Dolly hit a swerving shot which required Pieterse to get down low and save with one hand, before Jaakkola was at it again to deny Musona with a save at the near-post.

The Finnish goalie produced yet another remarkable save with 20 minutes to go, keeping out Nkhatha’s shot with his legs, before another chance for Ajax. Pieterse spilled Cecil Lolo’s long-range shot, but reacted briliantly to deny Eleazar Rodgers from point-blank range in the follow-up.

Then, on 85 minutes, the goal eventually came. A long ball found substitute Katlego Mphela, who chested the ball into Musona’s path. The Zimbabwean controlled beautifully and beat two defenders before chipping the keeper.

Mphela missed a one-on-one with Jaakkola soon afterwards, but Musona made sure of the points on 90 minutes when he ran onto George Lebese’s cross and outjumped Jenniker before heading into the back of the net.

mtshaly92 You know nothing about football, all those players you mentined are doing well when they are given a chance. Mynhard is not part of the first team and when was the last time you saw his name on the Chiefs team list? Gould, Masango, Rusike, Baloyi, Mtshweni and Nkosi are good players. We are winning because we have enough depth in the whole team. You never here Baxter complaining that Khune, Shabba, Yeye, Masha, Mathoho, Gaxa, Masilela, Parker, Musona, Katsande are not around because we have replacement for all these players. All these players were not always around this season but they were replaced.
