Mamelodi Sundowns beat Free State Stars

Posted: 18 March 2014 Time: 19:50

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Free State Stars 2-1 in their League match on Tuesday night.

The goals were scored in the first-half by Anthony Laffor and Dove Wome. Moeketsi Sekola scored a late goal for FS Stars.

Stars had defender Daniel Cardodo sent off in the second half for a studs-up tackle on Lebohang Mokoena, which forced him to be taken off the field.

The first chance of the game came in the 12th minute when Dove Wome fired a shot at goal but Daniel Agyei was well positioned to make the save.

Just three minutes later and Sundowns were in front, though when Anthony Laffor tapped in from close-range. The goal started from Surprise Moriri who played an excellent through ball for Mzikayise Mashaba who beat his man crossed to Laffor who had an easy tap in.

Moriri nearly got number two when he made a late run into the danger area and got onto a delightful chipped pass from Laffor. But Agyei did enough to stop the danger.

Then four minutes before half time, Sundowns scored again. Mashaba started a move that involved Laffor and Nyandoro, but when Nyandoro’s shot was deflected; Wome was alert enough to rifle home the rebound and show once again why he is deadly in front of goal.

The second half lacked the excitement of the first period and Sundowns were hardly troubled.

In the 54th minute Rashid Sumaila came close with a powerful header from a corner kick, which just flew over the crossbar.

Then Lebogang Mokoena, back on the field after a long time out injured, did well to get a shot on goal after 66 minutes, but he skied his effort way over the crossbar.

His night was cut short though when Daniel Cardoso was sent off for a late studs up challenge on Mokoena. ‘Cheeseboy’ had to go off and was replaced by Alje Schut.

In the final moments of the game, Moeketsi Sekola banged in a consolation goal, but it was little too late.

An early goal is what the doctor ordered for Sundowns. I hope they will be able to add another goal to avoid tense finish.

I haven't a team that can disappoint like this one. Its a win but why concede against 10 men. This is crap! And this always happen.

Its look like position number 02 is guranteed for Mamelodi Sundowns now at least Pitso would be proud of himself having to avoid relegation last season then the following year finish second.I guess his 5 year plan is going very well lets give him the chance to build the team and see how many more players that he singed this season will he released as surplus to requiment next season and see how many more will join the team come end of season but I am hearing 7 are in the pipe-line.

well done ka bo yellow...but it seems like we stopped scoring instead conceding, otherwise 3points is all that is important at the moment.

Yes m'happy too with 3 points although we need to dish out more convincing performances instead of taking foot off pedal just coz we have 2 goal cushion. I'd like to see more of Mabunda (good work rate) and Percy Tau (exciting young talent).

Mgqwabeni  so do the right thing, zebra, get out of the way and let the seven come to the promised land where there is a plenty for every man to feed his own family. watch us taking Q4 and join us celebrating winning the league. you are forgiven, in advance, for hating us all season long

Man city got a player sent off over the weekend and they won by 2. That was a long distance shot. Sundowns won away but you are still complaining

Silver Line KBY  There were times back in the day where we were very very convincing and we lose ... i dont really get worried about getting convinced anymore. Soon as these wins come on the regular it will become a habit and players confidence will be elevated then we will start playing convincing football ... rome was not built in a day dawana, lets rally behind the boys.
