Enyimba claimed both the bragging rights and all the points at stake in the first Oriental Derby of the season, courtesy of a 2-1 win over Enugu Rangers on Sunday evening.
The game started in exciting fashion, with Enugu Rangers looking the better of the two sides in the opening half-hour, however the Enyimba found their feet and took the game to the visitors but were not able to penetrate Rangers defence marshalled by Cyril Oriaku and Senegalese strongman Pape Ousmane Sane.
After a goalless first-half in which the hosts missed a series of chances to take the game beyond the visitors, Sibi Gwar scored on the hour-mark to give the People's Elephant to lead and send the crowd at the Enyimba Stadium at Aba into a frenzy.
Sibi struck again ten minutes later, but his celebrations and that of the fans was cut short after centre-referee Opeyemi Amao rightly disallowed the goal.
With Enyimba looking in control of the game, Andrew Abalogwu scored in the 75th minute of the game to give the hosts a commanding lead.
Rangers were however able to pull a goal back courtesy of an own-goal from Semiu Liadi, after the player deflected a cross from Ejike Uzoenyi into his own net.
The result helped Enyimba maintain their dominance at home over Enugu Rangers who have not picked a point in Aba over the last 12 years.
