Mamelodi Sundowns v Polokwane City

Posted: 15 March 2014 Time: 20:01

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Polokwane City 1-0 in a League match at Loftus Stadium thanks to a goal from Teko Modise.

In the 5th minute Kabelo Lichaba somehow managed to direct a powerful cross from Mokoena over Modiri Marumo’s crossbar from point blank range, he should have done better.

Sundowns were making all the early running and broke the deadlock in the 17th minute through Modise.

Surprise Moriri’s initial effort was cleared off the line by Mbhele but Modise was on hand to stab home the rebound, 1-0.

Hlompho Kekana hit one of his thunderbolts on the stroke of half-time but Marumo was well positioned to keep out the powerful effort.

Sundowns goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands was finally called into action five minutes into the second half but was hardly tested as he easily gathered Thabo Rakhale’s tame effort.

To their credit, the visitors looked more threating as the half grew on, pushing Downs deep into their own half on occasion.

Phulane Tlolane went close to levelling matters in the 71st minute when he lost his marker before directing a header at goal but Sandilands had his near post covered to make the save..

Sundowns looked content to sit back in the final exchanges and were nearly punished in stoppage time.

Rakhale’s curling free-kick from just outside the area was on target but Sandilands was again up to the task.

Sgonondo if history wasn't there for all of us to use as testimony than the world would be doom, I agree with you when you said, Sundowns has won the league 5 times in the PSL, however it is a known fact that football was there before PSL was introduce, are you throwing that history out of the window ?, bear in mind that Sundowns was there as well.

@Jaacko

Yes from 1985 Sundowns was there, Chiefs from 1970. But anyway say from 1970 to the PSL era, how many leagues did we have? Whites only league, blacks only league, etc. I think its only fair to judge from the PSL era not that we are discarding the history before that. Anyway from all the leagues we've had before PSL is the only fifa recognised league.
