Dikwena derail Chiefs charge

Posted: 12 March 2014 Time: 19:23

Platinum Stars arrested the Kaizer Chiefs juggernaut with a 2-0 victory over the Premiership leaders in Rustenburg on Wednesday night.

Chiefs, who were previously unbeaten in 15 games in all competitions, were undone by goals either side of the break from Siphelele Mthembu and Robert Ng'ambi at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.

Ironically the last time Amakhosi tasted defeat was at the hands of Dikwena in the Telkom Knockout in November.

In an entertaining contest, Mthembu scored nine minutes in from a one-on-one situation after being put through on goal by Ng'ambi.

Chiefs winger Siphiwe Tshabalala twice threatened to equalise around the half-hour mark, with one of his powerful efforts from range forcing a sharp save from Man of the Match Siyabonga Mpontshane.

At the other end, Amakhosi youngster Reyaard Pieterse was likewise made to work to keep out venomous strikes from Thabiso Semenya and Lindokuhle Mbatha respectively.

The Glamour Boys nearly drew level on the stroke of half-time, but Tefu Mashamaite's shot from a corner was denied by the cross bar.

Stuart Baxter's men showed intent after the interval, with Tshabalala drilling a shot wide before Morgan Gould headed a free-kick straight at Mpontshane.

However, Stars doubled their lead in 59th minute when Ng'ambi bundled in a right-wing cross from Mbatha, with the visitors unable to find a way back despite pressing in the closing stages.
