Stars draw with Ajax

Posted: 8 March 2014 Time: 15:16

Free State Stars and Ajax Cape Town drew 1-1 in a Premiership tie at Goble Park Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Ajax substitute Tashreeq Morris headed home a 63rd minute equaliser after on-loan striker Richard Henyekane pounced on the stroke of half-time for the relegation-threatened hosts.

The point sees Ajax move up to eighth place on the table, while Stars remain second from bottom.

Carl Lark had the Urban Warriors' first attempt on goal in the fourth minute when he met a Keagan Dolly corner-kick, but he headed inches over the target.

In the sixth minute a piece of individual skill from Abbubaker Mobara saw the Ajax man go on a mesmerising run that beat two defenders before his shot from 16-yards out was magnificently saved by the goalkeeper.

At the other end of the park, Ajax’s gloveman Anssi Jaakkola was in fine form and made a number of good stops.

First, Jaakkola produced a good save to thwart Abdul Basit Adam from 16-yards out. Then, seven minutes later Jaakkola was at his best to deny Reuben Thebakang from an acute angle on the left.

The next effort on goal only came on the half-hour mark as Henyekane fired a 25-yard free-kick just wide of the left-hand post.

Ajax’s defence went to sleep moments before the interval as a mistake from Nazeer Allie allowed Henyekane, who is owned by Mamelodi Sundowns, through on goal and he made no mistake with a clinical finish from 14-yards out, to make it 1-0.

The second half saw Ajax with more of the ball possession and they finally made their pressure tell when Morris drew level with a fantastic 18-yard header following a deep left-wing cross from Aiden Jenniker.

Only the brilliance of Jaakkola saw Ajax ensure they come away with a point when Danny Venter broke through on goal in the 81st minute, but he was thwarted by the big keeper in a one-on-one situation.
