Brazil beat Bafana Bafana 5-0

Posted: 5 March 2014 Time: 21:32

Neymar netted a hat-trick as Brazil inflicted a record 5-0 defeat on Bafana Bafana at Soccer City on Wednesday night.

Oscar and Fernandinho scored the other goals as the Selecao showed the world they are ready to be considered serious challengers for the World Cup later this year, though the South Africans’ performance left a lot to be desired.

LIVE ACTION as it happened!

Gordon Igesund’s men seemed overawed by the occasion, with the defence in particular nowhere to be seen for large parts of the game as debutant goalkeeper Ronwen Williams was left woefully exposed.

Bafana actually had the first shot on goal through Dean Furman, but Brazil were soon in the lead, with Oscar opening the scoring on 10 minutes. The Chelsea man ran onto Hulk’s precise pass from midfield before chipping over debutant Ronwen Williams.

The hosts suffered a further setback soon afterwards when Bongani Khumalo was stretchered off with a head injury, with Siyanda Xulu coming on in his place.

Williams denied Neymar twice in the space of eight minutes with smart saves, while Xulu produced a last-ditch tackle to deny Hulk a goal. However, there was no denying Neymar a third time on 41 minutes as he got some space on the edge of the area before firing home under Williams’ body.

Bafana almost pulled one back on the stroke of halftime when Furman dispossessed a Brazilian in midfield and surged towards goal, but his shot went narrowly wide.

The visitors came out for the second half with a changed kit, but it seemed to matter little as they netted a third just 27 seconds after the restart. Again Neymar was the scorer, chipping the ball over the onrushing Williams and into the empty net.

Substitute Willian almost added a fourth seconds later when his curling shot went inches wide of the far-post, before a number of substitutions slowed down the tempo of the game.

This allowed Bafana some foothold – and almost a goal as Ayanda Patosi found rare space in the box, but Julio Cesar denied him from point-blank range with an excellent save.

The respite was brief though, as Brazil hit back through Dani Alves, who was brilliantly denied by Williams who, despite the scoreline, was having a great debut match.

However, the young SuperSport United man could do nothing in the 79th minute when Fernandinho powered a thunderbolt into the top corner for the goal of the game.

Neymar was close to his hat-trick a minute from fulltime when his curling effort took a deflection and went wide, but he did get his third in injury-time, tapping home from close-range after a tap down by Jo – though the defence was again caught ball-watching.

So 5-0 to Brazil as they inflict a record defeat on Bafana, who will have some serious questions to answer before the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers kick off.

To tell you the truth poi, nope! This failure was just a flash in the pan that got transfer listed by second division Oldham Athletic and post to Doncaster where he's struggling like a demon to get a place in the first team, never mind commanding a regular berth in the starting lineup but the same holds true for khumalo as well. So like I said long ago, Furman is just a waste in bafana when you have jali, kekana and Reneilwe already there cause for me they are all better than him. He's just a overrated average cow that can't even get game time at lowly Doncaster, really! Nxa sis man. Once and always bucs.

This boy failed to marshall his defance, thabo nthethe did not lead his defence correctly as expected, our players failed to do the basics like first touches, spacing and passing, this was also an indication that SA players are bad irrespective of wether they were bafana ba chiefs or not as some chiefs haters would say, this is a country problem we need to select two teams foriegn based and locally based and all the players must be under 30yrs of age and safa must organise friendlies be it namibia or swaziland it`s not a problem cause those teams play seriously against us and this foreign players rules must be corrected.

jmafu59  Your post does not make any sense. I was expecting to read about how they performed, not what you knew about them before the game.
