Nabil Bentaleb to play for Algeria

Posted: 16 February 2014 Time: 15:54

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Nabil Bentaleb has pledged his international future to Algeria despite being eligible to represent France.

The 19-year-old was born in Lille and has represented France at junior level, but is eligible to play for Algeria through his parents.

Bentaleb has made a positive impression in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur since coming into the first-team reckoning under Tim Sherwood.

The Algerian Football Federation has now announced that he will be part of the squad to face Slovenia in a friendly next month.

“He has agreed to play for the country of his parents after meeting Algerian Football Federation president Mohamed Raouaraoua,” the federation said in a statement.

“Bentaleb will be called up for the next phase of the national team's preparations on March 1, ahead of the match against Slovenia on March 5 in Blida.”

Algeria have been drawn in Group H for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil, alongside Belgium, South Korea and Russia.
