Premier Soccer League match report Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 Ajax Cape Town

Posted: 15 February 2014 Time: 19:40

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Ajax Cape Town 3-2 on Saturday night, with referee Victor Gomes awarding five penalties at Loftus Stadium.

Sundowns deservedly collected maximum points via goals from new signing Thabo Nthethe, Katlego Mashego and Anthony Laffor, while Nathan Paulse and Lance Davids netted for the Urban Warriors.

Gomes also produced three penalties in Golden Arrows' 3-2 defeat of Polokwane City a week ago.

Downs, who moved within six points of PSL leaders Kaizer Chiefs, dominated throughout, and earned a penalty in the 18th minute when Thulani Hlatshwayo was adjudged to have pushed Teko Modise in the area. Modise, however, failed to beat Anssi Jaakkola from the spot, with the big goalkeeper dropping down smartly to his right to make the save.

The Brazilians, though, took the lead in the 27th minute, when ex-Bloemfontein Celtic captain Nthethe headed in a Modise free-kick from the left for his first goal for the Tshwane giants.

Mashego, who returned to the side in place of the injured Cuthbert Malajila, doubled the advantage six minutes later, as he converted a penalty after Man of the Match Bongani Zungu tumbled in the box under a clumsy challenge from Granwald Scott.

Zungu nearly got a third goal just before the interval, but his shot from the edge of the area was foiled by the upright.

Soon after Gomes controversially awarded another spot-kick after Downs' Moon and Alje Schut went up for an aerial challenge with Karl Lark. Paulse made no mistake from 12 yards out.

Gomes stamped his mark on proceedings again in the 55th minute, as he penalised Scott for a hand-ball in the box, but Mashego put his attempt against the cross bar.

Mosimane's charges, however, went 3-1 up in the 76th minute, when substitute Anthony Laffor, on for Mashego, headed in a corner at the near post.

Ajax pulled one back, predictably from the spot, in the final minute, when a free-kick struck a hand in the wall. Davids, who came on for Scott, buried the ball past Kennedy Mweene.

Even a new born baby knows that no trophies for Signclowns for as long as Modise is their property!

Oh how beautiful African voices are in song! I don't even understand why Danny Jordan told the world that blowing vuvuzela is our culture. People in this country used songs to defeat apartheid and it is wonderful to listen to Ka Bo Yellow and Masele contributing so beautifully to our football. Keep it up guys.

Some haters have a problem with Parker's penalty conversion rate... You now wish you had him... And please stop disputing his goal scoring performance...you do not say the same negatives when other teams' players take penalties...like mashego.
