Premier Soccer League match report Maritzburg United 2-2 Kaizer Chiefs

Posted: 11 February 2014 Time: 19:10

Kaizer Chiefs were unable to make it 10 Premiership wins in a row as they drew 2-2 with Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium on Tuesday evening.

United halted the Chiefs juggernaut via strikes from Man of the Match Ryan de Jongh and new signing Bhongolwethu Jayiya, while Kingston Nkhatha and Tefu Mashamaite netted for the champions at Harry Gwala Stadium.

The result leaves Amakhosi on 40 points from 18 games - nine points ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, who have two matches in hand. United are 13th on the table with 17 points - four points above the drop zone.

Maritzburg made the ideal start to the tie, as De Jongh thumped a volley in off the post from 20 yards out after Mulomowandau Mathoho headed a Rheece Evans cross towards the edge of the area.

Chiefs, however, hit back five minutes later, as Nkhatha tapped the ball in on the rebound after Siphiwe Tshabalala's rising drive slipped through Shu-Aib Walters's fingers and hit the cross bar.

Walters, though, did well in the 20th minute to push out a shot by the overlapping Siboniso Gaxa, who was operating at left-back due to an injury to Tsepo Masilela.

Soon after, Jayiya, a January loan recruit from Bidvest Wits, curled a left-footed attempt narrowly over the target before Tshabalala fired a strike straight at Walters at the other end.

The Team of Choice then took the lead in the 36th minute, when Jayiya converted a penalty for his second goal in as many games after PSL debutant Lorenzo Gordinho tripped Kurt Lentjies in the area.

Both sides had chances before the interval, as Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune tipped over a header by Mario Booysen before Mashamaite squeezed a free volley wide of the United goal following a corner by Tshabalala.

The Glamour Boys came close to drawing level in the 55th minute, but Mathoho's booming header off a corner was acrobatically foiled by Walters.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter made a double substitution 10 minutes later, as marquee signing Katlego Mphela came on for his first outing in the black and gold at the expense of Nkhatha, while George Lebese replaced the ineffectual Knowledge Musona.

The league champions pressed in search of an equaliser, and got their reward when Mashamaite nodded in a Bernard Parker free-kick from the left in the 80th minute.

Mphela nearly snatched victory two minutes later but he rattled the side-netting after being released by Tshabalala.

I honestly don’t have time anymore to listen to such people because they just bark ,moan because of jealous

I blame PSL for protecting zebras from "operation close that gap". There's no reason why sundowns don't play while other teams r playing. Whether they like it or nt that gap is gonna be closed. "To all haters Keep left while I pass Right" KBY.

Gordnho regained his confidence after that foul, thought his head would go deeeeeep into the sand. Mtsweni needs to play now so that he can see that he has the Sir Baxter's belief. Or else we could have had 2 youngsters that are lacking in confidence after last night had Gordinho not picked his head up and play well as he did after that penalty. Well Done!

Chiefs need to collect 21 points from the remaining possible 36, to retain the league. It is for them to lose it.

coaching a team like pirates, chiefs or sundowns is not the same as coach cosmos or maritzburg united.the pressure is just too much for these local coaches: who thought DaGama, Rodger would struggle at pirates? pitso is struggling at sundowns despite all the blank cheques he gets

I see the threats have begun... Took them long enough didn't it..?

But we're used to that coz last season they threatened to unseat us from number1, Threatened to win the CL. Threatened us about Kalaba....

So keep the threats coming nd mind the gap while ur at it

El Jeffe Untapped Talent it looks like you are missing the point I am trying to make, or you  misunderstand me.

- I expect a team that reaches 61 points to win the league this season;

- Mathematically teams from N0 1 to Aces can reach 61 points;

- Practically not all of those teams will reach those points, i.e points WILL be   dropped    along the way;

- If 'the teams behind us at the top will win all their games' as you put it then KC will not win the league(But I am proposing the opposite, that KC WILL win the league)

- I am therefore saying practically I do not see any other team except KC reaching 61 points and winning the league. Should this not happen, it will be nothing short of a miracle.

BucsVele  we mame! u still dont smell the coffee! I said it last week Pirates are going back to the era before Krol,Roslee and Jali arrived and Sundowns outplayed them at their home ground,imagine if Billiat converted those clear cut chances you would be humiliated at home cos u dont have a coach and strikers,keep fooling yourself come the 25th u will get 4- 0,Wome will be back to dismantle that already dead midfield,the less said about central defence the better
