Ajax oust ten-man Wits

Posted: 7 February 2014 Time: 19:35

Ajax Cape Town beat ten-man Bidvest Wits 1-0 on Friday night, with Karl Lark getting his first PSL goal for the Urban Warriors, while Kofi Dankwae was sent off at Cape Town Stadium.

The result leaves Ajax ninth on the table with 22 points from 17 games - 17 points adrift of pacesetting champions Kaizer Chiefs, and three behind fifth-placed Wits.

The hosts struck five minutes in, as Lark, who was signed on loan from Santos last month, blasted home from close range after veteran defender Matthew Booth failed to deal with Nathan Paulse's cut-back from the left.

Soon after, Wits midfielder Matty Pattison tested Anssi Jaakkola with a low, powerful drive but the Finnish goalkeeper dived smartly to push the ball clear.

Jaakkola was called into action again in the 35th minute, as he was forced to swat away a looping rebound following a determined run by Onismor Bhasera.

Dankwae was then dismissed on the stroke of half-time for catching Abbubaker Mobara with an elbow in an aerial challenge.

The Clever Boys showed intent after the interval, as Bhasera went past Nazeer Allie before drilling an effort on goal, which Jaakkola did brilliantly to keep out.

The Urban Warriors, though, should have gone 2-0 up in the 54th minute, but Keagan Dolly lifted his shot over the bar after being released one-on-one by the hard-working Paulse.

Dolly nearly made up for his miss in the 67th minute as he dragged an attempt narrowly off target, while his teammate Toriq Losper fired high and wide shortly after replacing Lark in the 72nd minute.

Another Ajax substitute Eleazar Rodgers, who came on for Paulse, also had a good chance to put the game to bed but Moeneeb Josephs foiled his strike with a fine save late on.

Wits came agonisingly close to salvaging a point in the dying stages but Aiden Jenniker cleared off the line to ensure a first win for Ajax interim coach Ian Taylor in his third game in charge of the Parow-based outfit.
