Orlando Pirates caretaker coach Eric Tinkler applauded his men for showing "great character" in their come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Bidvest Wits on Tuesday night.
Tinkler made a winning start to his tenure in Mayfair thanks to second-half goals from new signing Helder Pelembe and substitute Kermit Erasmus, with Students captain Sibusiso Vilakazi on target for the visitors at Orlando Stadium.
Tinkler, who replaced Roger de Sa in the Bucs hotseat last week, said: "The boys showed great character in the second half, and I'm very proud of them.
"It's been a difficult week but they've showed a great, professional attitude at training, and we saw that in the second half."
The former Clever Boys midfielder and tactician added: "We have got a very good squad, which is important as we have got value on the bench.
"Kermit came on and helped change things, [Mpho] Makola and others also contributed."
Meanwhile, Wits mentor Gavin Hunt blamed the lengthy league break for his side's underwhelming display in Soweto. Hunt's charges' previous Premiership match was against Bloemfontein Celtic on December 21.
"What do you expect when we haven't played for seven or so weeks, and they've played three or four games?
"We were always going to be rusty, if you don't have that match intensity, you're going to struggle."
