Orlando Pirates vs SuperSport United PSL

Posted: 18 January 2014 Time: 15:02

Orlando Pirates dominated possession and chances, but it was SuperSport United who emerged as 2-1 victors at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers had by far the better of the 90 minutes, but goals from substitutes Mame Niang and Dino Ndlovu - on debut - handed Matsatsantsa the three points.

Happy Jele scored a fortuitous goal in time added on, but it proved no more than a consolation.

Pirates had four corners inside the first 10 minutes and continued to dominate throughout the half as the Tshwane side all but defended.

Thandani Ntshumayelo's effort was wide off target in the sixth minute, before Andile Jali played a through ball but Kermit Erasmus' tame effort didn't even hit the target when a better option could have been to release the ball to Oupa Manyisa to his left.

A minute later and Daine Klate's cross found Sifiso Myeni in the box and he hit a left-footed shot, but Ronwen Williams was equal to the task.

In the 34th minute Jali's long-range effort from outside the box couldn't beat Williams, who was quick off the mark to push it away for a corner.

Edwin Gyimah, who had been fouled by Ntshumayelo in the 18th minute and received medical treatment, was forced to eventually come off in the 36th minute, with Morne Nel taking his place.

Erasmus hit the bar with the last effort of the first half with Williams well beaten.

Pirates started the second half in much the way they finished the first stanza.

However, they were made to pay for fluffing their chances when Niang, who replaced Mathebula at the start of the second half, rose highest to connect a cross from Sibusiso Khumalo, burying it on the rebound after Meyiwa parried his header onto the upright.

And rather than defending their lead, SuperSport coach Cavin Johnson opted to add more men in attack with debutant Ndlovu replacing Chenene.

The move was a masterstroke as 10 minutes after coming on, Ndlovu benefited from another Khumalo cross for a free header to double the visitors’ lead.

Roger de Sa reacted by bringing on new sigining Helder Pelembe for Ntshumayelo in the 68th minute and Lennox Bacela taking Erasmus' space in the 75th minute, but Bucs still found the going tough in front of goal.

Bacela's free header from a cross by Khethowakhe Masuku in the 84th minute was off target, though at the death Pirates finally found the back of the net through Jele. Mor Diouf tried to clear, but only succeeded in kicking it into the defender, with the ball going into the back of the net.

But it proved no more than a consolation as SuperSport hung on for the three points which lifts them to fourth place, while Pirates remain 11th, though with five games in hand.
