Gumede: I am not happy with my Orlando Pirates debut against Celtic

Posted: 3 December 2013 Time: 12:24

Mbongeni ‘Shoes’ Gumede says he is not pleased with how his Orlando Pirates debut went, but says with the support of his teammates he will improve.

Gumede has been at the club since he was 12 years old, having played for Pirates juniors, the reserve team Yebo Yes United, and Sivutsa Stars and Jomo Cosmos on loan.

The defender made his first team debut against Bloemfontein Celtic, and looked uncomfortable on the pitch, and gave away a penalty as Pirates went down 3-2.

Do you think Gumede's debut was as bad as many fans are making out? Have your say on Facebook.com/KickOffmagazine or Twitter @KickOffmagazine!

“Pirates is a big team and the demand is greater than in any other team I have played for to date,” the 20-year-old tells Bucs’ official website.

“Obviously, I would have loved to have registered my debut with a good performance and a win but it wasn’t the case.

“I am not too happy with what I did on Saturday but it can happen to any of us – fortunately, I have the support of my teammates and the technical team and all I have to do is move on.

“I am a footballer and I have to be prepared for such things – it was not easy for me but I am happy that I went on the field with the determination all the players had, which was to win that match.”

Pirates development academy director Augusto Palacios came out in support of Gumede in the wake of criticism from the fans, saying he expects the youngster to represent Bafana Bafana one day.

I just wish the media could give our youngsters a break, concentrate on improving boy, leave the media alone.I wish Team's PROs will prohibit the youngsters from speaking to the media.

the boy needs protection; he was thrown in the deep end. when Pirates hammered one team from Durban 4-0, he should have been given a chance at that time when the score was in favor of the team, unlike when you know that Siwelele is a tough nut to crack and then you put the young boy, i am for the youth but not in this way.

The boy was overwhelmed by the occasion, which is normal for a debut in an institution like PIrates however at some point it had to be done, this is our product and we have to support it to be up to speed to football at this level. If we don't have faith in our own development products, who will, big UP to the coach for taking the risk, the boy can only grow from what happened on Saturday, anyway, where was the captain to protect him or did he also need protection from Mahamutsa or Sangweni.

I blame Lucky Legwathi and Gcaba....mxm..two senior players who failed to protect  and guide this boy.

Where is Siya Sangweni to help this boy?.

Legwathi does not seem to care anymore....

Legwathi was defending with a huge smile on his face.. He doesn't care anymore.. As for Gcaba.. I mean really, he was teaching this boy the Old Mac Donald song "with a moo moo here.. And a moo moo there.."

Kickoff is really trying hard to hang this boy,,,unfortunately Bucs fans are too smart for that and won't crucify him instead all he will get is support and over and above that, he will not crack but rather this will toughen him up.

I like the boy`s mental strength and attitude, he was just unfortunate that his debut game happened to turn out the way it did. With time and support from his teamates he will come right. I also think he is a good player as i saw him taking a few celtics players on in the dying minutes of the game. Keep ur head up mfana and u will make it................UP THE BUCS I will remain

He was unfortunate to have his debut on a day my players were not hungry to win.

Platinum here were come, come Saturday to lift our first trophy of the season as we are in the treble operation.

With De Sa or no De Sa this season, we will lift the remainder of the cups.

Should he leave the Pirates ship, I'll be happy to have Stevovo, but will respect the Iron Duke's decision.
