Mbongeni ‘Shoes’ Gumede says he is not pleased with how his Orlando Pirates debut went, but says with the support of his teammates he will improve.
Gumede has been at the club since he was 12 years old, having played for Pirates juniors, the reserve team Yebo Yes United, and Sivutsa Stars and Jomo Cosmos on loan.
The defender made his first team debut against Bloemfontein Celtic, and looked uncomfortable on the pitch, and gave away a penalty as Pirates went down 3-2.
“Pirates is a big team and the demand is greater than in any other team I have played for to date,” the 20-year-old tells Bucs’ official website.
“Obviously, I would have loved to have registered my debut with a good performance and a win but it wasn’t the case.
“I am not too happy with what I did on Saturday but it can happen to any of us – fortunately, I have the support of my teammates and the technical team and all I have to do is move on.
“I am a footballer and I have to be prepared for such things – it was not easy for me but I am happy that I went on the field with the determination all the players had, which was to win that match.”
Pirates development academy director Augusto Palacios came out in support of Gumede in the wake of criticism from the fans, saying he expects the youngster to represent Bafana Bafana one day.
Pirates’ next face Platinum Stars in the Telkom Knockout Final on Saturday.
