Augusto Palacios says Mbongeni Gumede has great future

Posted: 3 December 2013 Time: 10:14

Orlando Pirates Development Academy Director Augusto Palacios says Mbongeni Gumede will develop into a great player that will represent Bafana Bafana.

The Bucs youth product was handed his debut in the 3-2 defeat against Bloemfontein Celtic, but struggled to adapt and also gave away a penalty.

And while Palacios admits the youngster made a few mistakes, he has backed him to become a star.

“I was very happy to see him get an opportunity to play his first professional game for Pirates, having first arrived here at the age of 11,” Palacios tells

“He went through all the stages of development – Under-12, Under-15, Under-20, the Castle League, Vodacom League, First Division and now the PSL.

“He is a very good player and can play both central defence and in midfield. He has almost the same qualities as [Thabo] Matlaba in terms of flexibility and only lacks experience.”

Palacios adds: “I spoke to him after the game on Saturday; I think he played well and he will learn from his mistakes. It’s a process and mistakes are part of the game. He will learn a lot from playing alongside Jele, [Lucky] Lekgwathi and Matlaba.”

He needs to learn fast that tackle the oppenent while still out of the box..... You cant allow the opponent to get into the 18 area then tackle.... Dat is wrong defending!!!!!

Im a Chiefs fan & yes i know the boy caused a penalty, but i ENCOURAGE giving youngsters an opportunity to play, big up to Roger.Given time, the boy will mature,i'd rather have a youngster making mistakes than have a 29 year old Gaxa in my team.

Neoza i agree with you, id rather have a young player from "development" making mistakes, it just a matter of time before they get it right with experience.

DeBuc easier said than done without experience, he will get it right Jujulam

Pirates can play young stars whilst Zebras can not play young stars cause in order to play at Naturena you have to be over 28 years. A case in point is Yeye, Shaba, Masilela, Gaxa, Nkosi, Katsade, Bukenya, Parker, Nkatha, Dladla.

If you can get rid of two headless chickens running around like idiots Pirates will win something this year. Matlaba and Segolela are the most unintelligent footballers I have seen. They have skills in abundance but their thinking (football brain) is at zero level. What a shame...

Palacious is losing it now and Its high time he leaves our developmental structures. I mean this is a pure cow who cost us a game against Celtic.

Having played under Palacios  can we ready believe that he is playing using his right age?

He must be a product of age cheating......

Gumede is a good utility player and a great leader, big ups to RDS for granting him his debut
