PSL match report: Maritzburg United vs Orlando Pirates

Posted: 27 November 2013 Time: 19:11

Collins Mbesuma’s first half strike handed Orlando Pirates a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United on Wednesday evening.

Maritzburg United coach Clinton Larsen made five changes to the side that lost to Golden Arrows last weekend, with Ayanda Nkosi rewarded with a start following an impressive display against Abafana Bes’thende.

Former Buccaneer Michael Morton captained the Team of Choice.

Roger de Sa made three changes to the team that saw off SuperSport United to reach the Final of this season’s Telkom Knockout.

Lucky Lekgwathi, Aubrey Ngoma and Collins Mbesuma were all included in the starting XI.

Perfect footballing conditions along with a healthy crowd welcomed the two sides onto the pitch. The game was Bucs’ first in the Premiership since the Soweto Derby at the end of October.

In a quiet start to the match, both goalkeepers were almost untroubled in the early exchanges, as both sides opted to feel each other out.

But the visitors struck on 31 minutes, when Thabo Matlaba, who had been troubling the United defence down the left flank, made a powerful run up field before rolling the ball into the path of Mbesuma, who produced a sliding finish to put his team ahead.

United looked dangerous on occasion in the first half, but a lack of patience in the final third cost them dearly.

Chances were few as the second half kicked off, with most of the action taking place in the middle of the park.

The Team of Choice piled on the pressure in the final few minutes, with the Buccaneers defence looked tired, but they held on to secure their second win of the campaign.

The loss is United’s third on the trot, and they drop down to 10th on the log.

Pirates remain bottom of the table despite the win, but have only played four League matches.

MlamliTshaka Your comment is very stupid to say the list, what matters is 3 points at the end of the day.

Tsukutsa True Bhakaniya, being clinical is the only thing that differentiates between an average team and a great team in modern football. The flair and trickery is a bonus.

Think Awal had a fantastic game yesterday, very calm on the ball and defends very well also. Him and Nthethe are players we could have a look at in January as we need cover at the back. Our performance has to improve against Celtic though, we need more efficiency, more speed and more goals. Erasmus, Klate and Masuku should start on Saturday. I was also very impressed with way Jele calmed Jali down after that Morton tackle, and AJ showed great maturity not to retaliate as he would otherwise do in the past. And lastly, I wish we could have eleven players like Oupa Manyisa on the field, everything he does is just fantastic.

JohannesMaseko I was disappointed to see the same squad playing while we were promised fresh legs. We didn't play well either and I don't know what people see in Ngoma that I can't see, he had a poor game

good win

however Three 3 is not particularly chuffed with it, the tendency to rock up and think we are the only team on the ground must stop

our game execution must always be with purpose

we must do more of moving the ball quickly swiftly forward

for gods sake that where our goal came from

I like the way we always control games that's the stuff of winning teams

up the BUCS

Ngoma is a small boy compared to Makola and Masuku.

He played 75 minutes with little contribution.

I don't know what Makola has done to my coach, he deserve to start.

Myeni must sit on the bench.

Mbesuma is a glass and my captain ever green.

Matlaba is simply the best!
