PSL match report: Maritzburg United vs Orlando Pirates

Posted: 27 November 2013 Time: 19:11

Collins Mbesuma’s first half strike handed Orlando Pirates a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United on Wednesday evening.

Maritzburg United coach Clinton Larsen made five changes to the side that lost to Golden Arrows last weekend, with Ayanda Nkosi rewarded with a start following an impressive display against Abafana Bes’thende.

Former Buccaneer Michael Morton captained the Team of Choice.

Roger de Sa made three changes to the team that saw off SuperSport United to reach the Final of this season’s Telkom Knockout.

Lucky Lekgwathi, Aubrey Ngoma and Collins Mbesuma were all included in the starting XI.

Perfect footballing conditions along with a healthy crowd welcomed the two sides onto the pitch. The game was Bucs’ first in the Premiership since the Soweto Derby at the end of October.

In a quiet start to the match, both goalkeepers were almost untroubled in the early exchanges, as both sides opted to feel each other out.

But the visitors struck on 31 minutes, when Thabo Matlaba, who had been troubling the United defence down the left flank, made a powerful run up field before rolling the ball into the path of Mbesuma, who produced a sliding finish to put his team ahead.

United looked dangerous on occasion in the first half, but a lack of patience in the final third cost them dearly.

Chances were few as the second half kicked off, with most of the action taking place in the middle of the park.

The Team of Choice piled on the pressure in the final few minutes, with the Buccaneers defence looked tired, but they held on to secure their second win of the campaign.

The loss is United’s third on the trot, and they drop down to 10th on the log.

Pirates remain bottom of the table despite the win, but have only played four League matches.

HOME: Maritzburg United

Coach: Clinton Larsen

U can't say what about Morton's tackle, Jali should not have been there for Morton to tackle. He should have been sent off

The 3 points are welcome but if our players think that teams r jus gonna seat bak n admire our play, its nt gonna happen. This attitude cums frm last sezn, score a goal n adopt a wait n see approach. This tika teka kamina kawena is brilliant but it seems lyk we use it wrong sumtyms, superspot goal case in point. I'd rather hav us play lyk man city n be ruthless upfront.

3 points is 3 points but hw u get it counts as well. Lets show that we r the best on the field n try to kill games, let us nt be content with a single goal.

Our strikers mus show more hunger, repromand our wingers n middle fielders for a lack of supply.

Masuku nyc skills but cum one on one with keeper or defender will you show us a moment of brilliance?

Black n white I still remain.

In the league , consistency wins the title. It doesn't help either to win by an avalanche of goals, then loose the next match.

@MlamliTshaka  Champions are made by winning games where it matters the most, getting maximum points under difficult circumstances. Ddnt Chiefs win the League last season by winning with 1 nils?

I knew this win is going to be a difficult pill to swallow for our neighbours who are so used to watching good football dished out by Football 101 made easy from the University of Orlando. Judging by the way FNB was so empty, they do no longer feel important. Pirates always needs one goal and thereafter dish out free footballing lessons. Don't you dare equalize cos you will never bare the brunt
