Kaizer Chiefs vs Platinum Stars Telkom Knockout Cup

Posted: 23 November 2013 Time: 19:49

Platinum Stars played the better part of the match under pressure, but in the end walked off 1-0 winners over Kaizer Chiefs in the Telkom Knockout semis on Saturday night at Soccer City.

Dikwena will for the second time this season battle it out with Orlando Pirates in the decider following their win over Bucs on penalties in the MTN8 Final in September.

Pirates, who beat SuperSport United 2-1 earlier on Saturday, and Stars meet on December 7 at Mbombela Stadium.

Chiefs, despite exiting the tournament, had dominated the match, not least in the first half but had nothing to show for it by the break and indeed, by the end of the match.

It started with Willard Katsande and Reneilwe Letsholonyane playing a one-two in the ninth minute, but Yeye's shot was well wide.

Then it was Keegan Ritchie's turn to test Siyabonga Mpontshane in the 13th minute, but he too failed with his attempt. The leftback overlapped, played the ball to Bernard Parker, who found George Lebese.

In turn, Lebese passed over to Ritchie whose shot was saved by Mpontshane, but the goalkeeper couldn't hold on to the ball and it fell to Parker, whose tame shot couldn't beat the keeper.

In the 19th minute Lebese played in a cross and Parker clashed with Mpontshane challenging for the ball in the box, but the two players were fine to continue.

A minute later, Stars' captain on the day Henrico Botes was given a little opening and tried his luck from distance, but his shot was not even close to hitting the target.

In the 27th minute, Itumeleng Khune had to make a difficult save when Tintswalo Tshabalala's free-kick went past everyone and South Africa's Sports Star of the Year had to make a save on the line.

On 36 minutes, Chiefs nearly caught Stars on counter-attack. Siphiwe Tshabalala passed the ball to Lehlohonolo Majoro who passed over to Yeye but the midfielder's shot was straight at Dikwena's keeper.

With five minutes to go before the break, Lindokuhle Mbatha nearly caught Khune off his line, but the latter was alert to push over Mbatha's shot for a corner and in the end, Chiefs defended well.

On the stroke of halftime, Parker hit the crossbar following his attempt from a free-kick after he had been fouled just outside the box.

In the 51st minute Parker played Lebese through, but the winger's shot was straight at Mpontshane who blocked yet again.

Despite Chiefs' dominance, it was Dikwena who took the lead in the 52nd minute.

Tshabalala won a corner when his initial shot deflected off Morgan Gould. The winger went over and from the resultant set-piece, Thabiso Semenya, though unconvincingly, had a touch in the crowded area to beat Khune.

Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter brought in Knowledge Musona for Majoro in the 65th minute, but Chiefs continued to struggle to break down Stars' defence led by Benson Mhlongo.

To make matters worse, Musona was booked for simulation in the 78th minute much to the frustration of the Amakhosi fans.

Chiefs won a free-kick just outside the box in the 82nd minute when Issa Sarr fouled Tshabalala, but Musona's attempt was not even close to beating Mpotshane.

Dikwena held on to reach their second Final in just three months.

If I were that Wits player beaten by Gould, I would've personally laid a charge of assault against him. PSL and zebra camp are dragging this matter. I'm telling you that Gould would've been locked by now.

Yes the captain has right to ask question any decision by a refree but it should be done with respect Mr Khune.
