SuperSport United vs Orlando Pirates Telkom Knockout Cup

Posted: 23 November 2013 Time: 14:12

Andile Jali was the match-winner as Orlando Pirates reached the Telkom Knockout Final after a 2-1 win against SuperSport United at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Mame Niang had given the hosts an early lead, but Oupa Manyisa netted 30 seconds after the restart to bring the scores level.

The match went into extra-time, where Jali scored a sublime winner to send the Buccaneers into the Final, to be played against either Kaizer Chiefs or Platinum Stars.

Pirates suffered a setback before kick-off when Kermit Erasmus – who was on the original teamsheet – was forced to withdraw and replaced by Thandani Ntshumayelo.

SuperSport started well and Thuso Phala had an early chance which he fired straight at Senzo Meyiwa.

However, on 13 minutes they got the opener when the Pirates defenders dallied on the ball, allowing the home side to intercept. The ball found its way to Phala, who crossed for Niang to head home.

Sameehg Doutie then fired over the bar against his former side before United suffered a setback when Ronwen Williams was stretchered off the field and replaced by Rowen Fernandez.

The veteran keeper immediately proved his worth, twice denying Tlou Segolela, but he was powerless to prevent Manyisa from netting 30 seconds into the second half – Lennox Bacela supplying the perfect throughball.

Pirates dominated the match from then on and should have taken the lead on the hour-mark, but Bacela fired over after a flowing move.

SuperSport had a brief respite when first David Mathebula skimmed the woodwork with a free-kick and then Niang had the ball in the back of the net, but it was ruled offside.

Pirates’ injury woes continued on 80 minutes when Rooi Mahamutsa suffered what looked like a dislocated elbow, with Lucky Lekgwathi coming on.

The match went into extra-time, and again Pirates dominated without troubling the scorers. Segolela again shot well wide while Fernandez produced a world-class save to deny substitute Collins Mbesuma.

But the goal did come on 111 minutes – and it was a beauty. Jali picked the ball up in midfield and passed to Mbesuma, who flicked it over the defence and onto the chest of the midfielder who had continued his run. He showed great composure to fire past the keeper and see his side through to the Final.

I understand that not everybody is happy with some of our players perfomance, but this thing of us wanting to boo our players is not on. Let's not act like a bunch of chimps.

Khosi4Chiefs I think my brother you were trying to say Pirates is going nowhere meaning they are here to stay unlike these smaller teams like Chiefs who cannot reach even one final this season.

Those that are a always disgruntled should just stop their negatively, we don't need them as supporters. It's either you for pirates or not. Not every move, touch or shot will be perfect, the players are also human, just as you. Grow a pair. Once and always.

The final of what? The are only two teams who know how to get to the final in SA so far this season.those teams are OPFC and PS and no other team can cos this is the last cup to play in the first part of the season.welldone to these teams and hope they will continue to do well moving forward.to gayzer chips fans, stop thinking you are the it team in SA cos you are not,you have a clueless coach who sees madness and amateurish tendencies,i really feel for you and can only say.continue to sapot any team playing against Pirates and forget about family business cos they are not gonna listen to you at all.shame but true

champjuju Problem member is that some fans really behave like people who understands nothing about football, take Bacela for instance,he's been on top form for us and scoring crucial goals, can he do that the whole season??, maybe not,and as true fans of orlando Pirates,we need to support him more when he is down and not scoring, that's when he needs our support to boost his morale. Mistakes are going to happen but if you love Orlando pirates and you have a deep understanding of football you will know that as a player there are going to be those moments when thing are just not going your way and you need fans behind you. Let's support our players and get the best out of them. in RDS,Tebza,Tinkler and okpara i believe
