Bidvest Wits were held to a goalless draw by Mpumalanga Black Aces in a Premiership tie at Bidvest Stadium on Friday night.
The result leaves the Clever Boys fifth in the standings with 16 points from 10 games - four points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns and fives points ahead of ninth-placed AmaZayoni.
In the 10th minute of the match Wits could have taken the lead when Ryan Chapman flicked on for Getaneh Kebede, but the Ethiopian’s volley from just inside was excellently saved by Aces keeper Siyabonga Nhlapo.
Aces started the match at a slow pace but finally clicked 20 minutes into the game as they started their onslaught on the Wits defence. Their influential striker Mabhuti Khenyeza tested veteran keeper Moeneeb Josephs with a shot from just outside the box, but the former Bafana Bafana man was up to the challenge as he parried the effort away.
In the 30th minute Josephs again proved his credentials as a top class keeper when he parried away Khenyeza’s curling and dipping long-range shot from 30-yards out.
Wits should have been 1-0 ahead just seconds before the half time break. Playmaker Papy Faty spotted that Nhlapo had lost his footing on the goal line and he unleashed a low, long-range shot which agonisingly went wide of goal.
The second half was a cagey affair as both sides created lesser chances than in the first half. Wits were subjected to shooting from long range but never troubled Nhlapo in the AmaZayoni camp.
In the 75th minute Onyekachi Okonkwo outpaced veteran Wits defender Matthew Booth but the Nigerian midfielder fluffed the chance when he sold a dummy to Josephs but shot high off target.
With 10 minutes left in the match, the home side were subjected to long-range attempts which hopelessly went high.
On the stroke of full time Aces substitute Clifford Mulenga let rip with a thunderous long-range effort which came off the post with Josephs completely beaten.
