Bidvest Wits played to a goalless draw at home to Polokwane City in a Premiership match at Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Gavin Hunt’s side created the better chances on the night and will feel they should have walked away with all three points, but will have to settle for a share of the spoils thanks to a brave performance from the top flight rookies.
Wits almost got off to a flying start, with Robin Ngalande hitting the upright in the second minute of the match. The Malawian striker got on the end of a cross from Sibusiso Vilakazi, but his header rebounded off the woodwork.
The home side went on to dominate the rest of the first half, though their search for a goal went without reward. They had chances for the likes of Ngalande, Benjani Mwaruwari and Vilakazi, but they either missed the target or allowed City goalkeeper Modiri Marumo to make a save.
The visitors created only one notable chance in the first half. It fell the way of Galabgwe Moyana in the 16th minute after some sleepy defending from the Clever Boys, but goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs was able to parry the shot away to safety.
Both sides were forced into unscheduled substitutions in the latter stages of the first half, with Mwaruwari making way for Ryan Chapman in Wits’ first change, while Puleng Tlolane replaced Nhlakanipho Mkhwanazi for Polokwane.
Just as in the first half, the second began with the home side on the attack and nearly opening the scoring. This time Vilakazi made his way into the penalty area and got on the end of a cross, but his header was well saved by Marumo.
Just past the hour mark City put together a rare scoring chance, with substitute Tlolane getting a header on target, but against Josephs reacted sharply to make the save and keep the score line blank.
With just under 20 minutes to play the Clever Boys were denied by another excellent save from Marumo. The ‘keeper did exceptionally well to tip Kwanda Mngonyama’s shot over the crossbar from a Bhongolwethu Jayiya corner kick.
In the dying minutes Wits substitute Asive Langwe let fly with a fiercely-struck long range effort that looked destined for the top corner, but again Marumo was able to deflect the ball away for a corner kick.
