The star on Orlando Pirates badge explained

Posted: 23 October 2013 Time: 14:04

Orlando Pirates fans are waiting eagerly for their second star, but the club can actually add one any time they like!’s Zola Doda explains ...

Check out the photo gallery for this story here!

A lot of has been said about Pirates adding a second star to their jersey, but very few fans know that the Buccaneers had their first star even before they were crowned African champions in 1995.

To illustrate the point, on the latest KICK OFF magazine cover, a star can clearly be seen above the badge on William Okpara’s jersey.

After reaching the 1995 African Champions Cup Final, Orlando Pirates added the first star on their jersey ahead of the match against Asec Abidjan.

Whether that was an oversight or not, the team won the Cup and added the star, as can be seen on Brandon Silent’s jersey (right).

But it remains a mystery on what would have happened to the star had they lost the match.

After winning the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations, Bafana Bafana did not add a star on their jersey, even though other Nations Cup winners Egypt, Cameroon, Tunisia and Zambia have done so.

To this day Bafana Bafana, like Nigeria, do not sport the Afcon-winning star.

So why haven’t Bafana added a star to their badge?

Adding a star to a national team or club jersey is not an action sanctioned by Fifa or an earned privilege, it is a decision taken by a team concerned to represent an important trophy or trophies the team has won.

Uruguay: 2 World Cup wins, four stars ...

All eight former Fifa World Cup winners have stars on their jerseys. But Uruguay, who have won the Fifa World Cup twice, have four stars – two for winning the World Cup and two more for winning the 1924 and 1928 Olympics.

So how did the star thing start?

The first team to add a star on their emblem was Juventus in 1958, to commemorate winning 10 League titles.

Since then, all the Italian Serie A teams who have won 10 titles have added a star to their badge.

Juventus now have 29 titles – officially. However, they would have had 31 if they had not been stripped of two (2004/05 and 2005/06) after the infamous Serie A match-fixing scandal.

In response to this, the Bianconeri removed all stars from their badge this season.

Swedish football clubs have followed the Italian example and also add a star every time they win 10 League titles.

Other examples of clubs with stars on their badges

In England, only five clubs have stars on the team logo. Nottingham Forest have two stars for winning back to back European Cups in 1979 and 1980, while Ipswich Town have three for winning the 1962 English First Division, 1978 FA Cup and 1981 Uefa Cup.

Huddersfield Town have three for becoming the English side to win three English First Division titles in a row between 1924 and 1926.

Aston Villa have one for winning the 1982 European Cup, and Bury have two stars for winning the 1900 and 1903 FA Cups.

The most successful European Cup/Champions League club in England, Liverpool, do not have any stars.

So in a nutshell Mr Editor, adding a star on one's jersey is just a prerogative of a team not FIFA sanctioned phenomenon as we have been made to believe by some knowledgeable morons in this forum.

How I love this article, I will print it out and have it on my bedroom wall as a reminder of nothing else but the truth !!!

KOIYOKO I'm sure your team's jersey does not have a star, judging by your comment.

we will just comment because the article is about Pirates and its Star. Otherwise, this piece of writing is naked...its a snake without poison.

The editor titled the story "Pirates Star Explained" yet he goes all out and talk about meaningless things, for example, Y BB dont have stars, juventus being stripped off their star for allegations of match fixing.

In short: The editor is swearing at Us Pirates fans and Pirates by indirectly telling us the star is meaningless because teams like Juventus got rid of their star while national teams like BB and Nigeria did not even bother to put a star on their badge.

Let me sit on my comfortable bed and compile a poem about Second Star

Knowledge is like Onyx, One digs deep to have it.

Just like it is no FIFA regulated to enforce Macufe Cup to have a Trophy... One thing boot this journalist is that he himself cannot explain why Pirates had. Black one before winning but there after it was gold. He also can't explain why Esperance has two on....

No matter how much you try to kill the spirit of anticipating the second star Zola, we will continue to sing "Thina lomhlaba siwugezile".  I wouldn't be surprised if you follow the next door team, your bitterness is crystal clear in this article. In IsiNdebele you are called "Isbhidla mnyanya" translated "party spoiler" however you will never discourage us we will go for that second star meaning 2 Champions league cups for Pirates. I pause.

So basically Chiefs can add a star for winning Macufe?? Atleast tht will console them

This article is all over the place & shallow. It  fails to explain the significance of having a star on top of the emblems of the teams that have achieved a mile stone like winning the champions league of their continent.

It seems like the most successful teams in world football, do not entertain this STAR thing but then again their level of competition is too high. However  in a south african context it is good if Pirates add the second star to put some form of pressure to Chiefs to succeed as well.  We need to bring back that fierce rivalry and high level of competition in our teams to make the game more intersting. Actually I wish they win the trophy so that we get out of our comfort zone. If Pirates win the cup everyone will be on our case since we are both going to Africa so good luck mabhakaniya...that just how I see it makhosi.

I once posted a pic while doing a superman and lifting my gal, had to remove it cause you were musterbating, Lol
