Tlale: Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Mweene is more experienced than Sandilands

Posted: 22 October 2013 Time: 12:52

Former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper John Tlale believes Kennedy Mweene should be first choice ahead of Wayne Sandilands, but says a rotation system could be an option.

Since joining the Brazilians for a reported for a reported R6-million, Mweene has played seven matches, conceding seven goals, and has kept one clean-sheet, in a 4-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic.

By contrast, Sandilands, who was Bafana Bafana second choice goalkeeper, conceded 12 goals in his first seven games for Sundowns last season.

Sundowns results

“I know both goalkeepers very well and when I give my honest assessment I would say they are on the same level in terms of quality but Mweene is more experienced,” Tlale says.

“Kennedy is experienced and communicates a lot with his outfield players but he goes through periods in a game when he loses focus and concedes goals I don’t expect him to concede.

“On the hand Wayne has many qualities – like his reflexes – but his biggest weakness is his positioning. He really needs to work on that.”

Like Mweene, Tlale (left) played for Free State Stars before joining Mamelodi Sundowns.

Although Mweene has been used in all Sundowns’ matches this season, Tlale, who now coaches National First Division side Sivutsa Stars, believes that Sandilands will get his chance.

“The question of a rotation system depends on the goalkeepers you have. If you have two goalkeepers at the same level then there is nothing wrong with rotating because you don’t want to keep another goalkeeper on the sidelines without playing, because he will lose his reflexes.

“But if it’s an experienced player and a youngster then it’s okay to play the experienced guy until the time is right for the youngster to come in. In Mweene and Sandilands case, I think Pitso [Mosimane] knows what he is doing and I don’t want to say he should do this or that.”

Your comment is not clever. Sundowns is doing well and you say Pitso is a failure. Sundowns has a new team rotating players will just prolong their jelling. players must fight for their position. Chiefs played 99% same players the whole season and they are the champions now. Barcelona did the same, Bayern Munich did the same. you do not win league by rotating players. if you are not sure ask Arsenal and their rotation of goalkeepers last season.

We African Champs EOrlandoPirates The best coaches in the world will tell you,you never temper with a winning combination and I can count with my eyes closed Spain,Barcelona and Madrid sqaud same ppl gami in and out.Pitso's sqaud to gell and only lost one game.Neeskens lost his job because of tht rotation because he wanted to please ppl like you,in one game he beats Chiefs 4-1 and the next game uses different players and the rest was history. The only thing Pitso needs to do is to work on how his players play as a team because wht lacked in Sundowns last season was scoring goals now they create opportunities bt the need to play as a team.

Also disagree with 'We African Champs fake' do u become the player of the season, top goalscorer if u play this weekend and be on the bench the next weekend. Messie, Xavi and all, play week-in-week-out to achieve all these accolades. This is not charity ntate.

Lastly, Pitso is the only coach who has not lost a league game so far. So calling him a failure does not make sense to me. I think u're the failure

Even if you play the best goalkeeper the world can offer you will always concede penalties and twit goals. The partnership of Arendse and Schut is suicidal. It can only work when you are playing opposition like Celtic who are definite facing relegation this season.

According to me, Arendse should only be used as a cover. He failed to save Santos from the gallows of the dreaded relegation. I watched the wonder boy playing for his country in the 6 I demolition of the African giant Egypt. Why was he not used in 2-1 demolish by the Dekwena.

At list the coach could have used him second half. No offence to Wayne, you are  very slow and you lack football brains. Otherwise how do you explain your action that led to the penalty awarded to Stars and the second you were caught attacking, was  it Pisto's instruction. You were only required to clear the ball as football 101 state. Pisto was a centre forward during his days, he should find an assistant who have defensive qualities in that case he will help him to built a sold defense. seven goals in seven matches ......

Sundowns must be careful of what they pretend to be. Five unbeaten runs dont make you strong & irrefutable title contenders
