Cavin Johnson SuperSport United Telkom Knockout Moroka Swallows

SuperSport United coach Cavin Johnson was full of praise for his super-subs George Maluleka, Bradley Grobler and Thuso Phala after Telkom Knockout quarter-final win over Moroka Swallows.

The trio came on in the second half and scored all the goals as United defeated Swallows 3-1 to march on to the semi-finals.

“I think we played well in the first 15 minutes but Swallows took the game to us in the last 20 minutes of the first half. I thought they should have scored a goal or two,” Johnson says.

“But coming back in the second half, we told our players that there is one player on the pitch that will kill us, and that is Lerato Chabangu. He is outstanding as a playmaker, because they lost Lefa Tsutsulupa early in the game.”

Swallows were handed a blow in the 13th minute, when Tsutsulupa was taken off following a crunching tackle by Innocent Mdledle.

“There were moments in the game where I thought we played well, we hit the upright twice and Bradley missed two open goals. But all in all I think the changes we made in the team brought more life,” Johnson says.

“We brought Maluleka, Bradley and Thuso Phala because Mame Niang was losing it for us. We got goals and we are lucky to go through to the next round.”

Meanwhile, Swallows coach Zeca Marques rued his side’s missed chances, saying his team were not clinical enough.

“I thought it was a good football match, no doubt about that,” Marques says.

“I think the different was the question of clinical finishing; we were not as clinical as we usually are. We had a few great chances but it didn’t happen and football is like that – if you don’t score you get punished.”
