Telkom Knockout quarter-finals Platinum Stars beat Mamelodi Sundowns

Posted: 19 October 2013 Time: 18:39

Platinum Stars joined SuperSport United in the Telkom Knockout semi-finals after beating Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in a delayed tie on Saturday night.

The Brazilians opened the scoring through Dove Wome but Mogakolodi Ngele equalised from the penalty spot before Mduduzi Nyanda scored the winner in the second half at Moruleng Stadium.

The match kicked off 30 minutes later than scheduled due to bad weather.

Earlier, Matsatsantsa defeated Moroka Swallows 3-1 in their respective last-eight duel.

Sundowns showed their intentions as early as the first minute with Anthony Laffor firing a snapshot wide of goal before forcing Siyabonga Mpontshane to make a low save 10 minutes later.

Pitso Mosimane’s men took the lead in the 13th minute as Mpontshane was left wrong-footed on the line by a deflected strike from Wome following a quick attacking move.

Downs captain Alje Schut then saw his header going over the crossbar in the 15th minute, before Tebogo Langerman fired over a minute later.

Nyanda came close to finding the equaliser in the 24th minute with a brilliant curled effort which came off the inside of the upright with Mweene well-beaten.

Wome then tested Mpontshane from a tight angle in the 28th minute but the Stars goalkeeper was equal to the task, while Mweene also did well to stop a long range effort from Ngele a minute later.

The hosts eventually leveled matters in the 39th minute as Ngele converted calmly from the penalty spot after Siphelele Mthembu had been brought down by Mweene.

Stars came close to taking the lead in the 51st minute when Mthembu made a great run to meet a cross from Nyanda on the edge of the six-yard box, only to sidefoot wide of the upright.

Sundowns were awarded a penalty of their own five minutes later after Cuthbert Malajila had been brought down inside the box but Billiat blasted his shot over the crossbar after his first effort was saved illegally by Mpontshane.

Stars had opportunities at the other end but Mweene did well to tip Ngele’s effort over the crossbar in the 68th minute, before Robert Ng’ambi volleyed over the target a minute later.

Dikwena eventually made it count in the 70th minute when Nyanda showed his composure to control a loose ball inside the box before tucking his low shot under Mweene and into the back of the net.

Ngele almost increased the lead five minutes later when he got behind the defence on the left side of the box, but Mweene dived to his left to parry his well-struck shot wide of goal.

Despite throwing a lot of players forward in search of the equaliser, Sundowns were unable to create clear-cut chances, while Mzikayise Mashaba shot over the crossbar on the half-volley in added time.

Best coach in country - blah blah blah! Pitso talks way above his abilities. Bafana Bafana lost crucial points under Pitso - making our mission to qualify for Brazil impossible.

Pitso's shortcomings as a coach are there for everyone to see:

1. He is a coach with no plan B. In the platinum starts game he assumed that his starting eleven will lead the game until deep into the second half hence he brought two defensive midfielder (mabunda and kumalo) and moriri who can only stabilise the game. When starts took the lead, he only had 1 striker to call upon and he made a like-for-like sub instead of taking off a midfielder like Zungu and play with 3 strikers. Having more attack-minded options on the bench could have been effective than pushing a defender to a striker position.

2. His personal vendetta against players + unfair favouritism sometimes blinds his fair analysis of the game:

Two most ineffective players last nyt in Langerman and Wayne Arendse are going to cost him his job. In the absence of Punch, Mashaba can do a better job than Langerman. The fact that Rashid can be called to play in a crucial WC game for Ghana against Egypyt says a lot about his potential. Wayne is unconfortable and for a man of his experience, he makes a lot of bad errors. I still feel that Elias, Mphela, Modise, Henyekane, at least deserve to be on the sub bench if they r not starting.

Congrats to Dikwena

Kalamazoo  You cant possibly still blaming pitso for bafana woes, its becoming ridiculous now. Have you considered that the reason we didn't qualify for brazil could be because our officials ddnt do their match-fixing tricks.

Until Signcows stops being selfish during transfer windows they will never win anything. Look at billiat, we are hurt that they have taken him. He is pirates material but because they have marikana money they swayed him. He was going to achieve more at bucs than downs. Its no Modise as some suspect, its the broken hearts of many fans.

Well done to Dikwena for yet another win against Sundowns.Coaches and players should learn that the job gets done on the field of play and not talking about what they will do in the media. Well done to the players for their discipline and their high working ethics as well as to the technical team that instilled a winning mentality in the players. All the best for the next 2 games against Black Aces and Swallows.

No pitso is not a problm but teko is the main problm we'll win nothing with. Because we should have won tht match in the first half but we ddnt instead we conceded. Than we got a penalty and it missed p.stars did not not deserve a win against us. I know u'll happy because we lost but our bad luck is teko.
