David Obua is hoping to secure a move to West Ham United.

Obua to feature for West Ham tonight

Posted: 2008-07-17 11:20

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender David Obua gets a chance to impress English Premiership side West Ham United tonight.

Obua (24), is in the Hammers side to play Hampton and Richmond FC, a Conference side in a pre-season match at Beveree Stadium.

This will be the Uganda international’s final chance to impress and seal a dream move to West Ham.

Obua, who has spent the last eight days at Upton Park undergoing trials, has impressed the East London coaching staff.

“Now we want to gauge his match fitness and temperament,” a source monitoring his stay in London told KickOff.com.

The Ugandan is a free agent after his contract with Chiefs ended on June 30.

However, Obua will not be part of the West Ham squad that embarks on a pre-season tour of the USA and Canada on Friday for two matches against Columbus Crew (July20) and the MSL-All Stars (July24). He will rejoin the team after its 10-day tour of USA.

“He is good on the ball, but we need to test him in the game. Although it is a pre-season game, it is sold out and it will possibly bring out the best in him,” one of West Ham’s coaching staff reportedly told Julian Ferdinand, the patron of Proline Soccer Academy, Uganda yesterday.

Julian, who is also the father of two English Premiership stars Anton (West Ham) and Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), reportedly offered some pep talk to Obua.

Obua has won over 20 caps for Uganda and was top scorer for the side with five goals during in MTN Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers for 2008

Wonder 1+2<>4 Obua was let go by Chiefs because they said he wasn't good enough. What does that say about our league?
Chiefs let Bevan Fransman go because they said he wasn't good enough. What does that say about our league?

luk: 2008-07-17 12:34

If he goes on and sign for West Ham, it will be a good move for me him but there will be some question marks about the big teams in south africa who tend to offload players who are still good enough the league. I think its a shame to the so called big teams in S.A Soccer. I will be a wake up call for them.

For Obua i wish you the best man. Gud luck

Sbu: 2008-07-17 12:51

What does this mean for our PSL? It means nothing really. I think Chiefs, Cucs, Downs and maybe Celtic are bigger teams than West Ham. Just because West Ham plays in the richest leagues doesn't make them better. What have they achieved? Bucs have won the African Champions league, Chiefs the African Cup winners Cup, Down have a succes track record of their own. To me the Hammers are just a team who are at the right place at the right time to play in the EPL. I bet you our teams can beat West Ham, home and away !!!

Paul.M.A.: 2008-07-17 12:52

Marlon I am almost sure that Chiefs are regretting the day that they allowed Bevan to leave. It goes to show that some people rate you, and others don't, as simple as that. As Bevan,s father I believe that he was not given a fair chance in fully 3 years to prove that he was, and still is, a QUALITY CENTRE BACK or RIGHT BACK. He played all his games TOTALLY out of position at LEFT BACK. To my knowledge Ted only played him at Centre-back for 1 game ever. The funny thing is that he made the Bafana team under Stuart Baxter at LEFT BACK. Yet he has 11 caps at Under 23 level at Centre-back. It was only when Gavin Hunt recognized Bevan,s potential as Centre-back at Swallows, that EVERYBODY could see that he was a decent player. I BELIEVE THAT HE STILL HAS A WAY TO GO to establish himself in the Bafana team, but he must just remain FOCUSED ALL THE TIME, WORK HARD ALWAYS, LISTEN TO ADVICE, AND BE PREPARED TO LEARN ALL THE TIME. This is SOMETHING that I preach to him on a weekly basis. I seriously envy you for being able to watch the Bafana game against the Ausies in London. No chance of an extra ticket for me, as well as an airline ticket for me... HA. HA. Ha. Only joking. I will be in P.E to watch Bafana's match against Nigeria on 6 September. If you will be there, I would be pleased to meet with you to chat. There may be something in the pipeline for Bevan overseas shortly. PLEASE don't quote me on this. I don't know, I just have this feeling. Keep well, and keen to read your follow-up comments. TO EVERYBODY THAT SUPPORTS BEVAN FRANSMAN(my son) IN HIS CAREER, THANX AND APPRECIATION.

Dikotsi: 2008-07-17 13:03

Marlon, it means nothing, a player is only as good as teamates surrounding him, that is why football is a collective game. And Obua style of play could be another factor, his attitude to teammates, coach(of which he had problems in that departments) is a problem. He has never impressed in our league adn it will be a surprise if he does in England. also, being signed on is not being succesful...
There is nothign wrong with our league, but again, since its you speaking, there will always be something wrong with our league, your track record explains itself...

Marlon: 2008-07-17 13:23

Sbu if you think the big 3 in South African football can beat West Ham home and away - its clear you off your head. We cannot even get to the group phases of the African Champions league for goodness sake. Let alone win it. Pirate did it in the 90's where has South African clubs been since then. Dikotsi - South African football is in trouble because of fans like you that believe that there is nothing wrong with our football. I am a PATRIOT I dont hide behind stupidity and claim our soccer is the best. No I look, I read, and I understand.

The only way Bafana qualified for the 2010 World Cup is through Hosting. We have totally failed in the qualifiers. As a South African Soccer fan does that make you feel proud?

An honest man would say NO. But you 2 guys are so thick, you believe I talk down South African football. Baba our football lets itself down.

Dikotsi: 2008-07-17 13:34

Naijaboy..thank you. But marlon is os obsessed with English teams he will find something wrong everytime with our league.
Look, our league is not perfect, but we cannot compare with an establishment like england which uses around 80% of foreign players, has world wide media coverage...and still able to psyphone the best of our players... but to put a cattle among the pegions, give me the best 4 teams in terms of the elague standing in England since 1990, and explain why is the situation like that? Marlon..

Welile: 2008-07-17 13:43

Lets wish a fellow African brother good luck and stop the soccer politics. If he makes it at West Ham then it will be a great thing for African football. When one door closes another one opens.

wellcome back ndoda I hope you will be watching the mghty AMAKHOSI in action on saterday. We need to discuss our teams new signings baba

Marlon: 2008-07-17 14:07

Dikotsi - I obsessed with diski my brother. But that doesn't blind me from the facts that our mindsets are the biggest obstacle to us achieving greatness. We blame everything for our failures like money, media, racism, favouritism. It's alway them that have a problem not us. You like a child that has a bad report card.

I love it when I see Teko Modise at his best. But cry when I discover he is 26 and has never represented any of South Africa's youth teams. Why, where are our so call youth development experts?
I cry when I see Lebo Mokeona cannot even cross a ball after 4 seasons at Pirates.Where is this boys career going?
I cry when the highest goal scorer only scores 13 goals a season.
I cry when the highest goal scorer is always a foreigner.
I cry when Bafana loses against Seirra Leone.
I cry when the Big 3 cannot even make it to the group phases of the Champions league.
I cry when the SABC Soccer ****yst are on TV.

There are so many things...BUT I

Smile when I see Clifford Ngobeni working hard to go to Europe.
Smile when Rhee takes on the Germans in their on back yard.
Smile at Lucas Radebe because he took on the world and won.
Smile at Excellent Walaza because he is humble and wants to do better.
Smile at Khune because he works so hard at training.
Smile at Dikgacoi because he showed that KZN still has talent.

There are so many things. But dont tell me to close my eyes to reality when our Soccer isnt conquering the World. I dont make excuses in my life - I fixed it.

America started the Major League Soccer (MLS) 10 years ago. They didnt make excuses they new what they wanted to achieve and look where they are now.

USA 1 South Africa 0 Nelson Mandela Cup

USA in the Top 15 in FIFA World Football Rankings

Dont tell me to close my eyes to such rubbish.

Mdubuleni: 2008-07-17 14:11

Eish marlon Dikgacoi is not from KzN

Mdubuleni: 2008-07-17 14:13

He only plays for KZN team ndoda so stop smiling

Svai: 2008-07-17 14:18

Sbu: 2008-07-17 12:53,

It actually depends on what you mean by "big". I've looked at all the requirements though and found all the teams mentioned wondering. West Ham thumps all these clubs in all levels, including fans. West Ham fans are available in all the countries of the world while the SA teams are only known in Southern Africa, and a few parts of Africa. Let's not fool ourselves. There is no team at the level of West Ham in SA. To show that West Ham is a bigger team than all SA teams, all the players (and the bosses) of all the SA teams wouldn't say no if offered a contract by West Ham.

Obua was always an exciting player. I just can't understand why Thiefs were not playing him. They should have found a way to accommodate both Bhasera and Obua in their starting 11, or else loan the player to Pirates. I can't believe Pirates didn't snatch him because they are short of any quality players at the moment.

Marlon: 2008-07-17 13:23

I'm with you on this one. The standards of this league have dropped since the days I used to be its fan. They no longer have any strikers of note nor defenders. There are no Lucas Rhadebes, Phil Masingas, Daniel Mudaus, Fani Madidas, Eric Tinklers, Shane Mcgreggors, Wilfred Mugeyis, Pollen Ndlanyas etc. It is a league devoid of talent. It can't even manage to export a single player to Russia, Turkey, France or other mid-level soccer country in the past year. Yes, the money is better but the standards have dropped big time.

Zandile: 2008-07-17 14:19

who cares where BLACK MAMBA is going to play next season this guy is so big headed, overated and has no respect he thinks the world revolves around him, watch the space he is not going to last @ west ham he will go back to KAMPALA where he belongs.hamba lomdondoshiya omnyama loo!!!1

Marlon: 2008-07-17 14:20

eishh baba your right. Sorry

I smile at Dikgacoi - there is still talent in Free State.

Dikotsi: 2008-07-17 14:20

Marlon....i see where you come from, comparing again..and Olifant was eaten alive for drawing comparisons...
I think you are barking at the wrong tree by looking at our PSL and making such judgement, the reson you gave all have to do with development of wich everyone of us ha a problem with..The story of Obua has nothing to do with that, atleast, and you failed to explain a simple question hence you wrote a long list of irrelevant facts.
Go back and chekc my question, and try to answer this time, stop crying and laughing, it doesnt help. I say again, you will always find something WRONG with our PSL..and nothing wrong with your English PSL. rigth or rong. Answer the previous question please...

Mdubuleni: 2008-07-17 14:30

Svai: Obua was only good when playing against Pirates or Sundowns other than that he was just an average player and inconsistant.you need to understand soccer before you can understand why Chiefs din't play him

Mdubuleni: 2008-07-17 14:36

9jaboy we are proudly South African we won't copy what European countries are doing

Marlon: 2008-07-17 14:38

Dikotsi you full of excuses baba. Why dont you answer your own question, but you so clever, then equate it to the PSL. You alway blame, blame and make excuses.

Forget about Europe. Here is a Continental question for you?

List the strongest leagues on the African Continent?

Now thats a better question for you baba. No excuses there.PSL has got a lot of money that some Leagues in Africa can only dream of. Why isnt it the strongest?

Let me hear it.....excuses,excuse,excuses

Dikotsi: 2008-07-17 14:40

You still havent answered my question Marlon...eish, this guy.

Svai: 2008-07-17 14:58

Zandile: 2008-07-17 14:19,

From you comments I gather that maybe you have the answer why he was not being played at Thiefs. Has it got something to do with ill-discipline? If so then I would understand why he was let go. I would have let Mabizela go when he does some of his famous disappearing facts again if I were a Sundowns coach last year, despite him being the best centre back currently in this league. I hate ill-disciplined players.

Mdu: 2008-07-17 14:30

I think you should use your advice. Obua was bought all the way from Uganda by Thiefs because they believe he is not an average player. They would have been stupid to go all the way to Uganda only to buy an average player. Obua is the captain of his country, and their best player. He has performed at the top level for his country for years now. Of course if you only understand Thiefs and not soccer, then you won't recognise a good player esp. one that has been foolishly let go by Motaung.

Paul.M.A.: 2008-07-17 14:58

Come on Marlon... and everybody else... I don't read any comments to the comment that I posted. What's up!!!!

Proudly South African FOREVER, even if we will lose to Nigeria on 6 September.

Hi Paul

Sorry sometimes I get caught up on this site. I haven't been impressed with Chiefs Technical department for a long-time. Ertugal is backed up by a Technical Staff that have no clue. I'm surprised because Mr Motaung is a very knowledgeble man. However it looks like they have committed to fixing things up. Its beyond me how they wasted Bevans talents. I think Chiefs will be very competitive this year. I dont know about the game in PE, Paul. Knowing SAFA they will switch it to Pretoria.

Sarida: 2008-07-17 16:43

Obua was a ****y player, let him go before someone declares him dead.

Shonisani: 2008-07-17 17:05

The Manchester United squad:

Tomasz Kuszczak, Ben Foster, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, John O'Shea, Ryan Giggs, Michael Carrick, Wesley Brown, Paul Scholes, Owen Hargreaves, Carlos Tevez, Wayne Rooney, Mikael Silvestre, Gary Neville, Darren Fletcher, Daniel Simpson, Lee Martin, Fraizer Campbell, Darron Gibson, Jonathan Evans, Ben Amos, Christopher Eagles, Michael Clegg, Andrew Caveney, Gary Walker. Yoh-Yoh-Yoh

jeff: 2008-07-17 21:40

What's wrong with you South Africans? This is a lad who has proved good at big stages.Don't be that forgetfull guys,He was once voted for some valuable acorade in your league. That means you also appreciated his talent at one stage. If he's not good, why does he perform so well at the national team?Ask the Nigerians, they will tell you who Obua is.He spent three month on bench at chiefs(injured)only to come back and score a hatrick against Niger at a crucial qualifying campaign.I believe you all know what Injuries can do to a player.Recently,Ronaldinho was forced to find his exit from Barca.Look at Saha..This Guy is good. The future will tell, lets pray hummers land him a contract!

netsa: 2008-07-18 09:09

he is a very good player but he had to make way for young players such as lebese

Shonisani: 2008-07-18 11:02

Our friend Obua was not selected for play in da encounter between West Ham & Hampton and Richmond Borough. Da score was 4-2 in favour of West Ham, with Craig Bellamy scoring a brace. Lets hope da hammers will still sign Obua

Joseph: 2008-07-18 12:00

Eitha daar! Marlon mfowethu I cannot agree with you more on the issue of mediocrity in our league. If you think of players playing for our big teams like Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns their standard is inferior as compared to those of yesteryear players who used to play for the same teams-players such as " Ewe"," Thintwa" and " Mthofi". As for the SABC's so called soccer experts, the less we comment about them the better for this forum-they actually make one not to watch soceer on that channel anymore!
