KickOff.com’s Zola Doda is sure to take a flurry of abuse as he gives his predictions for the seven matches involving South Africans clubs this weekend.
CAF Champions League
Orlando Pirates vs Al-Ahly
Forget the Soweto Derby; this is by far the most important match for Orlando Pirates this season. With one foot on the semifinals and carrying the hopes of the country, the Buccaneers will run riot against the Egyptian side at home. Roger de Sa was clever when he rested key players like Lucky Lekgwathi, Lennox Bacela and Daine Klate for the recent League match against Plokwane City, so when he unleashes them against Ahly, they will be fresh and raring to go. The fact Ahly have already qualified could pose some danger as it will allow the Egyptians to play without pressure and apply their natural and deadly passing game. However, whis will not be enough to stop Pirates from winning the match.
Prediction: Orlando Pirates 3 Al-Ahly 1
Kaizer Chiefs vs Platinum Stars
Platinum Stars have picked up from where they left off last season, dishing out solid performances in both the League and MTN8. With one eye on the Soweto Derby 48 hours later, this is not the best time for Kaizer Chiefs to play the in-form Dikwena. Stuart Baxter will face selection headaches with the second MTN8 in the back of his mind, but for Stars, who are 4-2 up against Bidvest Wits, there are no such issues.
Prediction: Kaizer Chiefs 0 Platinum Stars 1
Moroka Swallows vs Maritzburg United
Except for one blip when they lost 1-0 to AmaZulu, Moroka Swallows have been in red-hot form, with Edward Manqele banging in four goals so far. Ernst Middendorp’s side have been blowing hot and cold this season and are yet to score on the road, so Swallows should cruise this one.
Prediction: Moroka Swallows 2 Maritzburg United 0
Mamelodi Sundowns vs Bidvest Wits
Pitso Mosimane’s newly-assembled team has been gelling nicely with Dove Wome, Bongani Zungu, Cuthbert Malajila and Khama Billiat proving exactly why the club splashed the cash on them. The Brazilians have gained confidence with every match they’ve played, but it won’t be as easy against a stubborn Wits side coached by Gavin Hunt. The Students are yet to lose a match in the League this season, but their inability to score goals might cost them.
Prediction: Mamelodi Sundowns 2 Bidvest Wits 1
AmaZulu vs SuperSport United
Craig Roslee’s side has been surprisingly good this season and big wins against Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows have boosted morale. Matsatsantsa are coming off a loss against Swallows and won’t find it any easier in Durban.
Prediction: AmaZulu 2 SuperSport United 1
University of Pretoria vs Golden Arrows
After a great debut season when they finished inside the top eight, University of Pretoria are going through sophomore jinx. This season hasn’t great for them, but Golden Arrows have been no better. Coach Manqoba Mngqithi has yet to settle on his team and dressing unrest between youngsters and senior players have spilt into the public domain.
Prediction: University of Pretoria 1 Golden Arrows 1
Polokwane City vs Ajax Cape Town
After losing key players and a long break which lasted a month, Muhsin Ertugral’s ‘young chickens’ have had a tough start to the season. But they looked really good in the draw against Mamelodi Sundowns during the week and should leave coachless and winless Polokwane City with three points in the bag.
Prediction: Polokwane City 0 Ajax Cape Town 2
