Orlando Pirates vs Polokwane City PSL soccer match report

Posted: 18 September 2013 Time: 19:05

Polokwane City put up a brave showing, but it was not enough to avoid their fifth defeat of the season as Rooi Mahamutsa handed Orlando Pirates a 1-0 win.

As predicted by KickOff.com, Aubrey Ngoma made his first start for Bucs, while Thamsanqa Gabuza was also given a start

The win was Bucs’ first of the League season, while a coachless Polokwane slumped to their fifth consecutive defeat.

Pirates were in full control in the first half but were unable to open the scoring despite having over 70 percent of the possession.

The Buccaneers were frustrated by a Polokwane side that camped in their own half, trying to defend and hoping to hit on the counter-attack.

Pirates played some-eye catching football and made their intentions clear, with Oupa Manyisa wastefully firing over from 10 yards out after a goalmouth scramble.

Kermit Erasmus fired a 25-yard shot goalwards, but it was over the bar, and a few minutes later Tlou Segolela tried his luck with a ridiculous effort from 35-yards out, which was equally high.

Two minutes later Erasmus should have given his side the lead with a free header, but he pushed his chance wide.

Erasmus almost made up for his wastefulness when he created a scoring chance for Ngoma two minutes later. The stocky forward made his way into the left side of the box and to the byline before squaring the ball, which resulted in a scramble, but Ngoma shot straight at the keeper from close range.

One of the best chances of the match came in added time of the first half and against the run of play, as Thobani Mncwango broke forward for Polokwane.

The Rise and Shine attacker made his way into the box, but fired a stinging shot straight at the keeper from 16 yards out, when an effort either side of him would have resulted in a goal.

Pirates continued to push forward in the second 45, and they almost took the lead in the 56th minute when Happy Jele’s 10-yard header beat the keeper, but was cleared off the goalline.

In the 63rd minute Rooi Mahamutsa went on a solo run and made his way to the edge of the box before firing the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to make it 1-0.

Polokwane tried to fight back, but were unable to do so and Pirates picked up their first win of the season.

Zebras should be reminded that when Bucs won double treble our defenders were scoring left right and centre. We have started operation one game at a time. Worry about our strikers and our defenders will score goals. Well done to the team. We should prepare for Egypt(Ahly).

Erasmus is nt a striker, the striker is Bacela n Gabuza, how can a striker always in the middle of the park playing one twos,if he is a striker it means Myeni is also a striker cz Erasmus is playing his(Myeni's)position,so those who don't know football keep on saying dat he is a striker

I am very disappointed by the way we played......we needed individual brilliance from a defender to breath.

They say they play tiki-taka, but what we see on the field is very different. When watching matches of Barcelona through this tiki-taka you expect more than 2 goals but Pirates Nooo, even on a day when a the opponents are coached by a Physio. Hehehehehe
