Post Office gives World Cup stamp of approval

WC stamp approved

Posted: 2007-11-07 13:59

The South African Post Office will join the nation on November 23 when it issues the second philatelic miniature sheet to celebrate the 2010 Soccer World Cup to be played in South Africa.

Students from the Pretoria Open Window Art Academy were invited to design this miniature sheet.

The instruction was to ensure that no soccer player of any colour be recognised in the artwork; nor could any official team colours or logos be used.

Tamarin Skead, a student at the Academy, entered the winning artwork for 2007.

Skead's design elegantly works around the restrictions of the brief. Featuring hands and bouncing soccer balls, her miniature sheet uses the colours of the South African flag with a soccer pitch as background.

"The hands are not gender or race specific. They symbolise upliftment, which the World Cup will surely bring to South Africa," she says.

"They symbolise cheering crowds, excitement and exhilaration – which is what our nation will experience during the World Cup. Most importantly, the artwork transcends the preconceptions people may have of stereotypical soccer fans."
