Orlando Pirates AC Leopards CAF Champions League

Posted: 14 September 2013 Time: 15:02

Orlando Pirates lost 1-0 to AC Leopards in the CAF Champions League in Congo on Saturday, leaving Group A wide open.

The Sea Robbers went down to Dimitri Bissik's 72nd minute strike in Dolisie.

The result sees Leopards join Bucs and Al Ahly at the summit, with the latter having a chance to move clear if they defeat Zamalek on Sunday.

In a goalless opening period, Pirates striker Lennox Bacela had a great chance to score but the ex-Bloemfontein Celtic man volleyed off target off a cross from Patrick Phungwayo.

Earlier, Daine Klate drilled a free-kick straight at Leopards goalkeeper Lawrence Ngome, while at the other end Bhebey Ndey shot wide, with Buccaneers keeper Senzo Meyiwa also making a smart stop to keep his team in it at one stage.

Leopards showed intent after the restart, and eventually got their reward when Bissik fired the ball past a back-tracking Meyiwa after the gloveman - who was making his 100th Bucs outing - failed to gather a corner.

Bafana Bafana winger Klate threatened with a late free-kick, which went narrowly wide, but the hosts held firm to claim the three points.

Orlando Pirates starting XI: Meyiwa, Lekgwathi, Mahamutsa, Phungwayo, Sangweni, Masalesa, Manyisa, Myeni, Klate, Mbuyane, Bacela.

Leopards starting XI: Ngomé, Nzamba, Moubhio, Miangounina, Bissiki, Lakolo, Gandzé, Niemba, Ntela, Mouzita, Ndey.

not sure why, @Bucaneer 2.0. but I've also realized that Bacela tends to wear a different number when playing in the CL but ku PSL he'd wear 17. (saying under correction).. but I think it has to do with the players having been registered in the CL with their respective jersey numbers from previous season. For example, Benni wore jersey 17.So  I think that's why Bacela can't wear it in the CL. Similarly, Thwala's jersey number ku PSL might have been already allocated at the time CL started. my imagination.

Remember Pirates don't envy African talent, you only play with 'locals'.

My personal take: Pie city fans complain about Tlou not being brought on and my response is how do bring a player that runs with the ball in a bumpy pitch? Another issue is that Pie city has one plan, wing play and TEAMS DO SEE IT!!! Bring plan B (like Baxter with 4-4-1-1; 3-5-2; 4-4-2; 4-3-3)... Particularly in this game they were supposed to bring Myeni next to Bacela and then play long balls behind the defenders because it was worthless to play a short passing game (and on that note, contrary to popular belief among rat fans, the team doesn't in any way play a short passing game, they just tend to pass the ball too much [too many touches without purpose] before they think about giving their wingers to put in a square) but long balls would have done the trick for them. Trying to play 'beautiful football' in bad pitches is a no no
