Lucas Thwala scored a brace to ensure Orlando Pirates progressed to the Phakisa Cup final courtesy of a 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic in Sasolburg on Saturday afternoon.

The Buccaneers will meet Free State Stars in the final, after Ea Lla Koto beat Kaizer Chiefs 4-2 on penalties in the first semifinal.

Wellington Sambu opened the scoring for Phunya Sele Sele in the second minute after they were awarded a corner following a mix-up in the Bucs’ defence between defender Benson Mhlongo and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

Mhlongo almost leveled matters for Pirates in the fourth minute with a snap-shot from the edge of the area, but Celtic goalkeeper Shuaib Walters produced a good save to tip the former Mamelodi Sundowns defender’s effort around the post.

Pirates equalised in the 16th minute when Thwala rose highest to head home a corner by Bennett Chenene.

Pirates were awarded a penalty three minutes before the break when Chenene was fouled inside the area, and Thwala coolly stepped up to slot home from the spot.

The score remained 2-1 at the break and despite Celtic pushing more men forward in the second stanza, it was largely a dull affair, with neither side seriously threatening the other’s goal.

The final kicks off at 3 pm.

Impressed with the Pirates right back 'Wadlal'umlungu' Mathias. As for Mhlongo, a professional showing. Kanono, Mothibantwa - I can't wait for the season to start.

Nick, let me tell you Y those guys are still playing.

1. If you put a player on transfer, you are still obligated to pay him, especially when he is still contracted to the team.
2. Those guys were put on transfer before the coach came on board, he might a different take on the matter, especially if they impress him.
3. It might be tactical on the part on management. By announcing that they are on transfer, these guys might lift up their game during these friendly games. If they do, we might either decide to keep them or another team might notice them and purchase them. Either way, Pirates benefit.
There you have it.

Irvin Mhlambi reminded me of Mandla Sithole - after the injury that effectively ended his injury. He is so fat and unfit, it was embarassing.
