Kaizer Chiefs most successful side in South African football history

Posted: 2 August 2013 Time: 13:03

Kaizer Chiefs are the most successful side in South African football history, but they have not been quite as dominant in League title wins as you might expect.

The current Premiership champions have won 11 League titles since the formation of the National Professional Soccer League in 1971, just two more than Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates and only three ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Have your say on our Facebook page:

And if you take the Premier Soccer League era into account, Chiefs have three league titles to Pirates’ four and Sundowns’ five.

But current Amakhosi coach Stuart Baxter is hoping to create a new dynasty of success for the side after last season’s League and Cup double.

Their championship win last year did ensure at least that they have won the League in every decade since the formation of the NPSL – three in the 1970s, three in the 1980s, two in the 1990s, two in the 2000s, and their success last year.

A total of 15 clubs have won the League title since 1971, but only five of them multiple times, with SuperSport United (three) and Durban City (two) the others outside of the ‘Big Three’.

Bush Bucks, Cape Town Spurs, Highlands Park, Jomo Cosmos, Lusitano, Manning Rangers, Rangers, Santos and Zulu Royals (now AmaZulu) are the others.

Love and Peace ,Amakhosi,Kaizer Chiefs

People can be jealous and say whatever they like about you mfana, but the truth is you’re the best keeper in Africa.
Beside Khune , tell me one player in SA that was selected as one of the best in the world (Top 50 best players in th World). Itumeleng Khune is the real machine , he has surpassed Brian Baloyi . This boy is talented ….
We’re blessed to have such player in our camp, I remember one lousy blogger saying Senzo Meyiwa is better than Itumeleng Khune haha ha haha. I’m sure Moneebh Jesephs will understand now why he was always number 2 in our national team, and he regrets crying about warming the bench .
