Nigeria's Super Eagles were left to rue what might have been after going down 2-1 to Uruguay

Posted: 21 June 2013 Time: 06:12

Nigeria's Super Eagles were left to rue what might have been after going down 2-1 to Uruguay, a result that all but eliminates them from the tournament.

But captain Vincent Enyeama said the players had a lot to be proud of, "You are always disappointed when you lose a game, and we are not happy," Enyeama told KickOffNigeria.com.

"But we played a good game. I would say one of our best games in recent years, so I'm proud of the players today."

Diego Lugano put Uruguay in front with a somewhat fortuitous turn-in as the Nigeria defence went to a sleep.

But John Mikel Obi, on his 50th appearance for Nigeria, made the defender look like a discarded part of the furniture as he drew Nigeria level.

The Chelsea man received a Brown Ideye layup, shimmied away from Lugano with a casual drop of the shoulder and placed home with his weaker left foot.

It was a goal of spell-binding skill, ice-cold calm, exquisite technique and measured precision.

But the last word belonged to Diego Forlan, making his 100th appearance for Uruguay.

From nowhere, the Uruguayan striking trinity clicked into gear as Ahmed Musa gave up a turnover, then found himself on his behind in a failed attempt at retrieval.

Luis Suarez found Edinson Cavani, who swept out wide to the arriving Forlan. The former Manchester United man cracked home an unstoppable thunderbolt to Enyeama's top corner.

It proved enough.

Nigeria: Enyeama - Obobona, Echiejile, Ambrose, Omeruo, Ogu (Mba - 66'), Mikel, Ogude, Musa, Brown (Akpala - 73'), Oduamadi (Babatunde - 45')

Uruguay: Muslera - Lugano, Godin, Pereira, Caceres, Rodriguez (Pereira - 87'), Arevalo, Gonzalez, Suarez (Coates - 83'), Forlan, Cavani

Uruguay 2 - Nigeria 1

Nigeria needs to start playing with our best strikers. Uruguay were there to be beaten today, but the Nigeria strikers lack that extra quality. You cannot get results against good football teams with poor strikers. The European Football Analysts on multiple channels all agreed Nigeria failed to get a result from the Uruaguayan game beacause of lack of quality in striking positions.

@ Mega - Do not be deceived Nigeria was a better team than Uruguay even with our inexperienced young strikers.

My Observations from this game.

I have always tried to be economical in my analysis on Keshi's team tho I put out some things here in the heat and tension after a game. But truthfully speaking, if you analyze soccer well without any form of bias, you would know Keshi's philosophy is dominance of a game. From all Keshi's games the none of the oppenents save for Peru have dominated SE. We always play with the ball on the ground.
After yesterday's game I know Keshi would know he goofed in his selection of players, because it is the same pattern the nations cup guys played these confed guys are playing. But the attacking prowess and individual brilliance of the nations cup attack is CLEARLY missing.
BUT I must commend the midfield and defence of SE. Keshi has made anyone that plays in the midfield of SE very effective. I take back my words on Ogude. I always thought he was a robotic player but the way he covered the midfield against Uruguay was superb. Even if we get walloped by Spain I don't personally care because every team defends against Spain. But I know Naija will not because I know this SE play without fear of any of team. We may likely get exposed.

I hope Mad NFF don't sack Keshi based on Confeds exit. Those guys have no yardstick in their hiring and firing process.
Congrats Keshi. Keep up the good work.

@francois , pls name names don't just say it, tell us the strikers'

We have so many strikers but how many of them are quality strikers, Keshi has exhausted the list may be the only one left is imo eziekiel, we just have to develop what we have and make them play together like the team we took to AFCON. It took 12 months to the 1st set of strikers and after injury to moses and Emenike , and fall out with Uche, i will say Mba, Musa, Ideye and Odunamadi has done a good job in such a short time.

Everybody that played today or over the last 2 wks were all from the bench except Ideye.

WE have Moses, Emenike, Ideye, Musa, Odunamadi, Mba , Mikel, Onazi and Ogude, if all healthy that is a pretty good front. How many more people can you put on the bench without affecting the bench for the defense.

We have a solid good team but they need 3 more months or 4 more friendlies to gell.

I think its time we look into the keeping department, captain Vincent Enyeama is old and our reserves are old also, we have been using Enyeama and the reserves for more than a decade now. It time for a young keeper that can blend we this young team.

Nigeria has what it takes to defeat spain but the only obstacle is our striking forces. The unavailabilty of Emenike, moses and Onazi cost us the tournament.

It was definitely a good performance but I don't think it was one of our best in recent years. If Enyeama was in good form he would have kept a clean sheet today because both of those goals could have been avoided especially the second one. It was straight at Enyeama from a tight angle. On a regular day he would have caught or punched it for a corner.

I am happy with the performance but disappointed they lost. With all the mouth I was making before the match I now look stupid. I still can't believe we lost to Uruguay, we were better than them.

I am very happy with my colleagues today in your analysis, even though we lost against Uruguay, Nigerian played like an African Champion, I am very proud of SE. All Keshi needs now is to shop for a good striker to replace Emenike because Ideye is clearly not one and can't take on defense. If a deadly striker like Emenike was on the field yesterday the result of the game would have been different, having said i think the whole deserve some praise. Fengor Ogude surprised me and I hope he keeps it up.

At the Nations cup, Nigeria's best games were CIV and Mali. But I would say yesterday's performance was kinda better than those performances at nations cup. I was so happy yesterday watching the match and seeing our boys chase everything, (both ball, man, shadow and refereee too...lol). I don't care if Keshi keeps reshuffling his attacking line to find the best mix. One of my fears is that Emenike may come and not be so sharp as we are all used to. So I want Keshi to have like 2 bulldozing attackers in the mould of Emenike for back-up purposes

Keshi you are good coach, but I will say it again, tactically you don't have it. You need a good goal scorer from NPL or overseas. What you have now are players that play behind the real goal scores. Also, you need Yobo to held with the D

Niger’s wait. I know that word performance is in your vocabulary and I respect you guys for that. You fail on your mandate you get fired. However with Steven keshi its different. There are more compelling legitimate reason why you need to keep and support Keshi

 You have a Team which will be ready during the WC
 For the first time I see a Nigerian Team that plays with pride, hunger and purpose
 Your boys have this winning spirit written all over the faces
 The WC qualifier is already underway
 Don’t temper with the Team as the players morale will be dampened

And lastly for my selfish reasons I want to see Nigeria in WC being coached by a Nigerian person. Lastly make peace with the fact that you will not beat Spain, the best you will get is a draw.
