Nigeria beat Tahiti 6-1 in Fifa Confederations Cup

Posted: 17 June 2013 Time: 22:57

Nnamdi Oduamadi scored a hat-trick as Nigeria opened their FIFA Confederations Cup campaign with a 6-1 drubbing of Tahiti.

Uwa Elderson Echiejile had given the Super Eagles a fifth-minute lead, albeit in fortunate circumstances as his shot took a double deflection before sailing past goalkeeper Xavier Samin.

Oduamadi got his first of the night on 16 minutes, capitalising on a poor pass before slotting past the goalie.

It got worse for the Tahitians just before the half-hour mark when Samin failed to hold onto Ahmed Musa’s tame cross, allowing Oduamadi to tap home.

The African champions had a succession of chances to extend their lead but were wasteful in front of goal as they went into the break 3-0 up.

Tahiti then stunned with their first ever goal at a senior FIFA tournament – Jonathan Tehau rising highest at the back-post to head past Vincent Enyeama, playing in his 81st international.

However, the underdogs’ joy was short-lived when the self-same Tehau put a cross from Oduamadi past his own keeper.

And Oduamadi’s night was to get even better when he completed his hat-trick on 77 minutes; in the process becoming only the second player after Fernando Torres in 2009 to score three goals in one match at the Confederations Cup.

Echiejile put the icing on the cake with a sixth goal ten minutes from time, but coach Stephen Keshi will be concerned by the profligacy in front of goal, as well as some slack moments at the back.

Nigeria next face Uruguay, while Tahiti’s task gets even tougher as they take on world champions Spain.

Little bit disappointed with the overall style of play, but I must congratulate Keshi and his team for continuing Nigeria's UNBEATEN run. The Super Eagles last lost a game 20 matches ago which dates back to mid 2011 in a friendly match against Peru

I'll put my money in it...Spain and Uruguay will score at least 12 -18 Goals against Tahiti....Someone pls tell Keshi and his boys to start packing their bags...These bunch of fools had the chance to score the highest number of goals naija or an African team has ever scored against an opponent..Musa , Ujah, Mba etc aren't good enough to represent any country in Africa not even Lesotho. I'm beginning to question what criteria Keshi uses in selecting his players. ..Imagine he has lost control, he can't even discipline them.

And by the way, where are the best players in the world some even say greatest, ain't they supposed to be playing in the cup of champions, I did see Iniesta and xabi ...

So the "greatest player of all time" can't even help his country to win a continental competition... Really I mean really...

@BLACKPANTHER, @BLACKMAMBA and @ EVERYONE HERE

IT seems we all watched a different game than the one @KOLA watched.
Everyone is disapointed in the way we played especially the likes of Musa (offside 6 times and missed goals), Ambrose (allowed the goal) and Ujah (what can I say?).

@KOLA is here talking about my papa dick for no reason. I guess he is gay

I am not impressed. The boys played with no direction and were very selfish. If we play like this against Spain and Uruguay then we are finished. Let this be a lesson learned. The players also seemed fatigued, especially our defense. The guy that replace Omeruo was very slow and John igu was running like an old man that chopped too much eba.

@Kola Us, Let's discuss maturedly. What kind of striker is Brown Ideye ?? May be Echiejile should be converted to a striker. Well, it wasn't the worst performance but how can we be throwing away chances so casual ?? Oduamadi is a talent to be honest, look at the way he displaced two Tahiti defenders to score with such ease. I thought a defender as tall as Efe Ambrose should have glanced that ball into touch and Enyeama should have held his line well. Musa is a fighter but his delivery is a suspect. Congrats Super Eagles, just keep your head up against the Spanish and Uruguan opposition. Up Naija.

If anyone thinks Ideye is bad, what about Ujah and Ogude? those two in my opinion have no business playing for Nigeria. They have continued to disappoint.I know that if not for Onazi injury, Ogude will be benched by Keshi. The lesseon here is, a good Coach should always have a good replacement for his first choice. Please Keshi stop using Ogude otherwise, a red card for Nigeria in the competition should not be ruled out.

I tell you, this is the worst performance of our strikers since I was born. I counted three different times we had two players against the goal keeper, and wasted, countless one on ones...
...this group could come down to goal difference...and these leisurely strikers of ours would have themselves to blame.

Jet lag, yes but at least I expected a display of professionalism tonight but starting with Ujah, Musa and then Mba, they all fall my hand. I mean how could they miss seaters face to face with the amateur goalkeeper. Without doubt all the off-field problems in the last couple of days is telling on this team. I hope they overcome to work together because that is the only way to get out of this group.

UZO, THIS IS WHAT YOU WROTE

"Musa is a stupid player and very dumb. He is not smart at all, just fast"

and this is what you wrote about Mikel.

"if Mikel does not score today he will never score for Nigeria again"

MY QUESTION IS IF MUSA IS YOUR HOME BOY CAN YOU WRITE THAT KIND OF STUFF ABOUT HIM?A LOT OF GUYS MISSED THEIR SHOTS AND MADE MISTAKES BUT YOU PICKED OUT MUSA, BROTHER THAT IS NOT BEEN SENSITIVE . NOBODY DESERVES THAT KIND OF HARSH WORDS, WE HAVE TO BE CAREFUL HOW WE REACT TO PEOPLE THAT WE DON'T LIKE, IT SHOWS THAT YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT HIM.

I wonder if these boys knew what they were playing today. Mba and Musa can be pardoned for their missed chances(at least their overall contribution to the team was still seen with the numerous chances they made) but this Uja boy just kept messing up. Oduamadi tried but Emenike would have eaten this game raw and netted at least 7 goals today. Also the guy supporting Mikel in the midfield didn't do well. We need Victor Moses back. Is it me or does Ambrose Efe sometimes look like he doesn't know what to do when the ball is on his feet? As for Enyiama, when will he stop making these silly little mistakes that always make our opponents to stain us. Arrrrgh, I feel like flogging all these boys 5 strokes of cane on their buttocks except for Oduamadi.
