Nigeria beat Tahiti 6-1 in Fifa Confederations Cup

Posted: 17 June 2013 Time: 22:57

Nnamdi Oduamadi scored a hat-trick as Nigeria opened their FIFA Confederations Cup campaign with a 6-1 drubbing of Tahiti.

Uwa Elderson Echiejile had given the Super Eagles a fifth-minute lead, albeit in fortunate circumstances as his shot took a double deflection before sailing past goalkeeper Xavier Samin.

Oduamadi got his first of the night on 16 minutes, capitalising on a poor pass before slotting past the goalie.

It got worse for the Tahitians just before the half-hour mark when Samin failed to hold onto Ahmed Musa’s tame cross, allowing Oduamadi to tap home.

The African champions had a succession of chances to extend their lead but were wasteful in front of goal as they went into the break 3-0 up.

Tahiti then stunned with their first ever goal at a senior FIFA tournament – Jonathan Tehau rising highest at the back-post to head past Vincent Enyeama, playing in his 81st international.

However, the underdogs’ joy was short-lived when the self-same Tehau put a cross from Oduamadi past his own keeper.

And Oduamadi’s night was to get even better when he completed his hat-trick on 77 minutes; in the process becoming only the second player after Fernando Torres in 2009 to score three goals in one match at the Confederations Cup.

Echiejile put the icing on the cake with a sixth goal ten minutes from time, but coach Stephen Keshi will be concerned by the profligacy in front of goal, as well as some slack moments at the back.

Nigeria next face Uruguay, while Tahiti’s task gets even tougher as they take on world champions Spain.

This Enyeama, up till now does not know how to handle corners and pull outs. I know his appologetics will defend him.

I pray Ike Shorunmu saw that of him. I commend all the players, it is not easy to score and win a game after the long journey from Namibia; Congratulations to the Eagles squad.

One would have thought that as the Tahitians were defending Keshi should have shifted to 3 : 5 : 2 or 3 : 4: 3 for more goals. My opinion

The players were selfish in the final third. They had chances to square the ball but went for 1v1 on the keeper.
Why should they not be selfish when the NFF officials have been selfish and denying them their bonuses?
That was horrible perfomance and should show that NFF instead of looking for ways to eat money should get on the phone and call the like of OGBONNA and Sidney SAM who are still eligible to play for Nigeria (in germany) and guarantee them a world cup roster spot (something Germany cant give them with the likes of Hummels, Gotze who are still very young.
NFF should recruit these players and get them into this team to improve the quality. If not, we might get embarassed in world Cup

Apart from the goals, am not impress with the pattern of play of the super eagle. the attackers are zero especially Ideye, the most worst striker i have ever seen in my life. He even worst more than the Taihit strikers.. I wonder what merit mba and ujah have to warrant a starting belt in this team.. They should be happy that, it was taihit we played after the disgrace of match bonus saga and late arrival. i wonder what would have happen if its uruguay or spain we meet in our first match. Sometimes, i wonder how funny this life is, imagine musa playing like that and you wonder how come cska moscow, a giant team in russian league signed him up into their team. His final delivery was that of an academy player, very very poor. the way he holds and push the ball when attacking makes you question his quality over and over again. he is a little bit worst tonight.

Damn the win it was an annonying performance, were was the passion? Cant understand why the boys tend to get so over confident, so many wasted chances must they dribble before scoring? Keshi should get start screaming this boys are starting to lose it, the attitude has changed they aint serious anymore.

Very Very disappointed display by the Eagles. The world knew the game was won before the game kicked off but alas! I have never seen such a disjointed and continually selfish display. No discipline! This is a game Nigeria could easily have won by double digits. Very disappointing.

The naija team just disgraced the entire Africa. This can't be the best team in Africa. The entire team including Keshi lack quality....

I am utterly disappointed with the way the boys handled this game. The Tahitian side was even easier to flog than I had imagined. I was expecting the Nigerian side to beat them by an easy at least 10 goals. Why is it that Nigeria plays reflective football? We let our opponents determine the kind of game we will play thus when we play against a stupid team we play stupidly and when we play against a strong team we play strongly. If the strikers could not convert all the chances they had against a team like Tahiti , is it against Spain or Uruguay that they will get the chance to? Anyway, I hope they will sit up now that they have made their mistake and rise up to the occasion against Spain and Uruguay.

This tournament was a chance to bring your world cup squad and have them gel together and we chose to bring these guys who (SHOULD NOT) be on Nigeria world cup team if we plan to make it out of our group.

NFF should start the recruitment of TOP Nigerian Players (players who are eligible to play for Nigeria).

Any player who is eligible to play for Nigeria should be evaluated and invited because the players I saw today are not TEAM players.

To hell with Ball possesion. The worst thing is to decieve yourself. If anyone, after watching this game today, comes to a conclusion that we played well based on the match statistics, then the person would just be deceiving themselves. What do you expect from semi pro players in any given sport. No boxing fan can stomach the fact that a doctor/lawyer that sparingly goes to the boxing ring to work out knocks down either Mayweather / Pacquiao in just a single round but still loses the fight. That would be a loss to the either of them.
Based on this insipid/embarrassing display from Nigeria today, I can't comment positively on this team.

So Tahiti next face Spain... can't even begin to think what will happen... Lord Have Mercy, matter of fact if I were the Tahitians I would abort the match and not show up and just accept a 3-0 defeat by default cause if they play it's certainly going to be a disaster, I can assure y'all that more that 5 goals will be scored by Spain, even if they play the subs the score will be as infatic cause they'll be playing to prove themselves.

@Kola, us... my brother forget the score line ok. you just need to ask yourself if that kind of display the naija team shows tonight is convincing enough for you to hope for a better team in the future. when you talk of discipline in front of goal, these guys are worst apart from oduamadi. oduamadi seems to be the only player that is calm in front of goal. ideye like i said, is the worst striker i have ever seen in my life..musa's finally delivery makes you to wonder and wonder.

Despite the scoreline, eagles performance was nothing to write home about. Musa is a very good player but still need to learn a lot, mba should not be recalled to the team after this tournament because he doesn't have what it takes to wear eagles jersey of which he have been given enough chance to prove himself but have been dissapointin, same goes to ujah though he is still young but does not have wot it takes to play for the senior national team. More players should be given invitation to jostle for places in the team, mikel needs a good creative partner in our midfield who can make the creative borden of the team to be lesser for him, players like haruna and jÓhn chibuike can be tested in that position. Ideye is a gooÐ striker but I see him as one of those great players that always have ill luck when it comes to international football, one of the good attributes of his game that I love so much is he's high work rate and unselfishness.
