Ahmed Musa scored with 10 minutes left to hand Nigeria a 1-0 victory over Kenya

Ahmed Musa scored with 10 minutes left to hand Nigeria a 1-0 victory over Kenya in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Wednesday.

The CSKA Moscow forward latched on to a visionary ball from Efe Ambrose and had the composure to loop high and over the committed Duncan Ochieng.

Nigeria went into the game top of the group but walking a tightrope after opening the door and allowing Kenya a peek in the reveres fixture last March.

But the Harambee Stars were hamstrung by the loss of four key players, and were underdogs despite playing at home.

However, with Victor Wanyama a controlling figure in midfield, they frustrated Nigeria and made life hard for John Mikel Obi's midfield.

Both chances created chances, even though Nigeria dominated most of the possession.

Wanyama however, picked up a knock in the second half, and his influence apwaned, Mikel's grew, with the Nigerian dictating play and looking to jack up the game.

Kenya's strategy though, proved to be their undoing. Waruru broke free on the counter and bore down menacingly down the left channel.

With no support, he tried to take on Efe Ambrose. The Celtic man calmly dispossessed him, then raked a long, looping punt to Musa, whose pace got him in behind the Stars defence.

Ochieng, way off his line, was caught unprepared. Nonetheless, Musa had the not so easy task of hooking the ball way high of Ochieng and into the net.

It proved to be the decider, but just to make sure, Stephen Keshi threw on Fegor Ogude to steady the ship as Nigeria held on for the win.

With second placed Malawi drawing with Namibia, the Super Eagles establish daylight at the top of the group.

Victory over Namibia next week will see the Super Eagles needing just a draw against Malawi at home in their final group game if the Flames win against Kenya.

If Malawi fail to beat Kenya, the Super Eagles will qualify with one game to spare.

Lets get this straight Mr Editor, Qualify for What? Pls it is not Worldcup we would be qualifying for. We would be qualifying to the next stage of 2 legs playoff with another team that will decide who goes to the worldcup.

Good victory for the Eagles Congrats, but the NFF should bring back Siasia. The Eagles need to score more goals. Siasia will improve our attacking football.

Congrats Nigeria. Ahmed 'Ferrari' Musa , thank you very much, you demonstrated why you are a triple-Champion.

Ideye should learn to take his chances, while his work rate is very high, his goal scoring record is quite poor. You can't miss your chances against teams like Spain, Uruguay , Brazil e.t.c and expect to win Confederation Cup. We miss Emenike . I think Ike Uche is still important in Super Eagles set-up.

Mikel Obi 'kererenke', 'Commander-in-chief-of-Armed-Super-Eagles-forces', lol. Kindly lead the team ( silently as usual ) to a resounding victory in Namibia, after which you will show the World a glimpse of your talent as you did in 2005 ( a deja vu of Bayern vs Chelsea finals ). You are a 'Big game player'.

Up Keshi ! Up Naija ! Up Super Eagles ! Green-white-Green for life.

Well done Keshi & Eagles i always knew it would be a tough game, as i expected the pitch was of standard but kudos to our boys for adapting, now though we got the result our attack didnt cordinate well as we could have got more goals cos we dominated the possession but lacked real penetration, Odumadi & Musa though they played wel didnt really didnt penetrate the Kenya defence as much as i would want, and for whatever anyone would say Keshi's subs were spot on, Ogu & Ujah helped up our game tempo and that was the catalyst that lead to our goal, again well done to the team, next is Nambia bring it on.

"If Malawi fail to beat Kenya, the Super Eagles will qualify with one game to spare." Point of correction If Nigeria win and Malawi fail to win, Nigeria will qualify for Round 3 where they will play a home and away match with any of the other group winners.

Anichebe, Ike and kalu Uche, Imoh Ezekiel, Sone aluko, Onyekachi Apam etc. Their inclusion in this team will make a world of difference. What suggests that Ogude and Igiebor cannot be converted to defenders? Or what suggests that Ideye must play in the central or support attacking roles? I think he will be most useful as a right winger. Amokachi did very well there for Nigeria.

Great coaches think out of the box. Ask Murinho and Mikel Obi. Westerhof did it with Ben Iroha and more.

That's what great coaches do. Switch players around and get the best out of them.

The ten group winners from Round 2 (this very stage) will contest Round 3. The teams will be paired into five home-and-away ties. The five teams that win their respective ties will qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
