Sameegh Doutie scored the only goal as SuperSport United beat Golden Arrows 1-0 in a League match at Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday.
Arrows played with 10-men from early in the first-half after goalkeeper Nkosingiphile Gumede was sent off for a dangerous tackle.
The small crowd that gathered at the Princess Magogo Stadium had to wait untill the 12th minute to see Arrows create a goal scoring chance. Thamsanqa Gabuza made a powerful run into the area but was well challenged by Bevan Fransman to miscue his shot.
Joseph Musonda was lucky not to receive his marching orders in the 20th minute after he appeared to strike Grobler during a tussle for the ball.
Nkosingiphile Gumede, though, received a straight red card two minutes later for bringing down Grobler outside the area in what was a dangerous tackle.
Matsatsantsa nearly capitalised straight away from the resulting free-kick. Mogogi Gabonamong glanced Doutie’s ball onto the outside of the post to go wide.
Grobler should’ve opened the scoring in the 34th minute. The striker evaded this marker but seemed to be over confident in his attempt to beat the Abafana Bes’thende substitute keeper Pavels Steinbors and as a result hit his tame attempt straight at the Latvian.
Matsatsantsa failed to capitalise on Gumede’s absence and as a result the first-half ended goalless.
Steinbors was lucky not to receive the second straight red card of the game. The keeper bizarrely caught the ball outside the area before diving back into the box in an attempt to fool the referee, the dive helped and he received only a yellow card.
SuperSport finally made their one man advantage count in the 71st minute. Doutie picked up a ball from Thabo Moloi inside the area and coolly slotted past Steinbors to give his side the lead.
Clifford Mulenga had a couple of chances to extend his side’s lead in the final 10 minutes but the Zambian was unable to find the back of the net.
Ronwen Williams pulled off a great save from point blank range at the death to deny Musonda a goal and the KwaZulu-Natal side a point.
The win moves Matsatsantsa up to fourth place on the log while Golden Arrows remain in 13th position.
