Orlando Pirates made difficult work of their first round second leg CAF Champions League clash against Zanaco but won

Posted: 6 April 2013 Time: 22:24

Orlando Pirates made difficult work of their first round second leg CAF Champions League clash against Zanaco but won 2-1 on Saturday night at Soccer City Stadium.

The Bankers, as Zanaco are known, started the better side but Bucs quickly took control of the match. Andile Jali burst through in the ninth minute and took aim, but his shot from just outside the box was saved by Racha Kola.

This didn’t deter Bucs, though, as they piled on the pressure. Eventually, Bucs drew first blood in the 18th minute and what a goal it was. Onyekachi Okonkwo’s attempt was blocked, but Khethowakhe Masuku was nearby and his pile driver was too good for Kola.

Zanaco saw red and tried to get back into the game. They had a chance to equalise in the 22nd minute, but fluffed the opportunity. Lee Ngoma crossed from the right but Rodrick Kabwe, who was at the end of the cross, failed to capitalise when his weak header was easily saved by Senzo Meyiwa.

Jali was forced off just after the half hour mark when he went down with a knee injury.

The score was 1-0 to Pirates at the interval.

After the break, Pirates continued where they left off in the first stanza. Happy Jele crossed and Oupa Manyisa, rather casually, hit over the bar. Pirates were made to pay for their miss.

However, soon Zanaco were back in the game. Musonda Mwape headed in the equaliser in the 48th minute from a cross. It was game on.

Then Klate had a great chance to finish things off for Pirates but wasted it in the 69th minute. Okonkwo played through a high ball and Klate beat the offside trap, but too many touches on the ball allowed Kola to close him down and in the end, Klate’s right-footed shot went wide much to the dismay of the Pirates fans.

In the 76th minute, though, Mpho Makola, who replaced Klate, scored a fantastic free kick and from there, Pirates were well on course to progress to the next round.

The last piece of action saw Meyiwa make a great save to deny Ziyo Tembo from a free kick in the dying moments.

Pirates win 3-1 on aggregate after their 1-0 success in the first leg in Zambia.

Orlando Pirates XI: Senzo Meyiwa, Happy Jele, Thabo Matlaba, Lucky Lekgwathi, Ayanda Gcaba, Onyekachi Okonkwo, Andile Jali (Masalesa 31st), Khethowakhe Masuku, Oupa Manyisa, Daine Klate (Makola 71st), Collins Mbesuma (Chinyama 69th).

Zanaco XI: Racha Kola, Henry Banda, Lee Ngoma, Mwelwa Sakala, Kunda Mushota (Salulani Phiri 46th), Ziyo Tembo, Samson Chilupe, Fackson Kapumba (Portipher Zulu 61st), Rodrick Kabwe, Davies Mwape, Stephen Phiri (Musonda Mwape 36th).

What a boring match watched by 300 fans. But really the standard of club football in SADC is pathetic. This ZAnaco team is just amateurish. Maluti FET would have given this team 5-0 for sure.

From the 85th minute! That is when I truly enjoyed this match. We were fantastic in that stretch. That is what we do best - finishing the game strong and having our oppenent constantly on the back foot when it matters most. More of that and these games in hand will be turned into 3-pointers.

What Masuku and Makola proved tonight is that we do have depth and quality. It's just that there is no proper rotation and these guys hardly get to settle in and when they do play they generally play kak. If Myeni was still fit he would be played week in and week out.

Now time to focus on TP Mazembe. TP Mazembe vs Orlando Pirates. That is one massive fixture!

Tiyani your problem is writing your match report before the game begins. Zanaco never controlled the game at the start, In fact zanaco never got a chance at goal until Jali was out injured. Pirates Controlled the game until that time when Andile was taken off. This is the type of reporting that lets you down, writing reports before the game starts and edit along the way..i know all of your type of match reporting you Palookas, it sucks. Pirates won 3-1, who was controlling the match?

??????Two cracking goals to seal the tie. Makola is what you call a dead-ball specialist and he also had some impressive touches, Roger should give him more game time. Somebody needs to tell Masuku to stop shooting at every chance he gets. Gcaba's defending is just atrocious and his combination with Lekgwathi is just not workin out. Lekgwathi has been missing the ball a lot these days, I'm just glad that Sangweni is back at training.

I really hope Jali's injury is of a minor nature, we CANNOT afford to lose him. Hope this victory gives us the confidence to push on for the remainder of the league season.

For the first time in many moons RDS changes worked, but I hate how some players selfishness is costing my team Matlaba,Mbesuma and Masuku need to share the ball with their teammates. RDS is finally starting to act like a Pirates coach and using his squad to the fullest there is no use complaining he must get on with his job.
